While in other countries the population’s health has long been managed digitally, patients in this country walk around with doctor’s letters. A special AI should now bring patients and doctors together better, says the Federal Minister of Health.
According to Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach, the use of artificial intelligence in the German healthcare system will lead to a noticeable improvement in medical treatment.
“AI can also enable research that we cannot currently do,” said the SPD politician on Wednesday in a panel discussion with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella in Berlin.
When e-patient files are available for all insured persons at the beginning of 2025, Germany will have a system that virtually covers the entire population. This means that when it comes to the data pool, we are even better positioned than the USA because the healthcare system there is so fragmented.

At the same time, Lauterbach emphasized that patients must always be given the opportunity to refuse participation (“opt-out”). As an example of a potentially successful use of AI in healthcare, he cited matching cancer patients who have a specific genetic variant of the disease with appropriate scientific studies.

Microsoft continues to push into healthcare
Microsoft CEO Nadella said that AI technology would also become established in Germany. Microsoft has been an important player in the healthcare sector since its acquisition of speech processing specialist Nuance.
Nuance originally developed dictation software for doctors, lawyers and other professionals. Since its acquisition by Microsoft in 2021, Nuance software has been expanded into a complete AI solution for people in healthcare.
In a conversation with Nadella, Lauterbach advocated strict protection of patient data. The population not only needs to be generally informed about the opportunities offered by the technology, but also talked about risks and uncertainties. “There are a number of things that we cannot control perfectly at the moment and we need to be open about that too.”
