Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken held telephone talks. According to the State Department, the parties agreed on the importance of the return of Iran and the United States to the observance of the nuclear deal. They also discussed bilateral relations between Moscow and Washington.

“Secretary of State Blinken and Foreign Minister Lavrov agreed on the importance of an early return of Iran and the United States to mutual adherence to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. The parties also stressed the importance of continuing coordination on topical issues of bilateral relations, ”State Department Spokesman Ned Price said in a statement.

On the morning of October 6, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported that the negotiations were held on the initiative of the American side. The report of the Russian department also noted that the parties discussed “prospects for restoring the full implementation of the JCPOA” and “a number of topical issues on the bilateral agenda.”

Iran signed a JCPOA with five permanent members of the UN Security Council (UK, China, Russia, USA, France) and Germany in 2015. The agreement implied limiting Iran’s nuclear program, as well as reducing its sales and purchases of weapons in exchange for lifting international sanctions. In 2018, the United States withdrew from the “nuclear deal” and reinstated sanctions. A year later, Iran began to waive its obligations under the JCPOA.
