After spending R$ 13 thousand in a mall in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), lawyer Rodrigo Barcelos de Oliveira was indicted by the Civil police for theft of falsely reporting a crime. After his trip to the mall, Rodrigo went to the police station to register that the purchases had been made by criminals; he claimed to have been a victim of lightning kidnapping. At the 16th Police Station (Barra da Tijuca), the lawyer said that while driving down Avenida das Américas, he was approached by two men on a motorcycle.

However, the police uncovered the hoax while checking the security camera footage: the lawyer faked the kidnapping itself. That’s because the equipment records showed the lawyer walking alone and with the bags, while shopping for more than three hours at the mall. When asked in testimony, Rodrigo claimed, in his defense, to have invented the crime due to financial difficulties and, “when he saw the fridge empty”, he would have decided to put the coup into practice.

However, according to the G1 portal, the lawyer’s shopping list included BRL 850.00 in designer underwear, a dog bed worth BRL 718.00, and a shoe worth BRL 690.00. Rodrigo also paid BRL 2,200.00 for a cover for a surfboard surf. To the police, Rodrigo detailed that the pair of criminals coerced him in the parking lot of Barra Shopping, in the west zone of the capital of Rio de Janeiro. One of the thieves allegedly spent about 5 hours shopping with the lawyer’s card up to the blocking limit, while he was held hostage by the other alleged criminal.

What did the police say?

According to the employees of the 16th Police Station of Barra da Tijuca, “after analyzing the mall’s security cameras, the agents confirmed that the report was a great hoax created with the intention of obtaining undue advantage with the non-payment of purchases made, since that the images show Rodrigo himself doing the shopping”.

Rodrigo’s shopping list

In the Rio de Janeiro mall, the lawyer who faked his own kidnapping went shopping at 11 stores:

more than R$ 2 thousand in a market; BRL 56.70 in the market; BRL 300 in batteries and treats; over 3,400 on a motorcycle helmet; BRL 690 in a pair of shoes; BRL 850 worth of items at Giorgio Armani; R$2,200 in a special cover for surfboards; more than R$ 1,000 in swimwear for the beach; R$ 400 in electronics cleaning products; BRL 718 in a dog bed; R$ 1.3 thousand in optics.

In total, Rodrigo spent R$ 13,035.90.
