Sam Leavitt Enters Transfer Portal, Leaving Arizona State Quarterback Future in Flux
Arizona State University’s star quarterback, Sam Leavitt, has informed head coach Kenny Dillingham of his intention to enter the transfer portal, sources confirmed to ESPN on Tuesday. The move marks a significant shift for the Sun Devils program and sets the stage for a competitive offseason in the quarterback market.
Leavitt arrived in Tempe after previously playing at Michigan State and quickly established himself as a key player, leading Arizona State to a Big 12 title and a College Football Playoff berth last season. During that championship run, he showcased his arm talent, throwing for 2,885 yards and 24 touchdowns.
Injury-Plagued Season Contributes to Decision
Despite entering the current season as the Big 12 preseason offensive player of the year, Leavitt’s campaign was cut short by a foot injury that ultimately required surgery. He was limited to just seven games, finishing with 1,628 passing yards and 10 touchdowns. Reports surfaced earlier this week indicating Leavitt’s absence from the team’s end-of-season banquet, fueling speculation about his future.
The quarterback has not yet announced whether he will pursue a career in the NFL Draft or seek another year of collegiate play, either with Arizona State or a new program.
Dillingham Expresses Support Amid Uncertainty
Coach Dillingham addressed the situation during a Sun Bowl news conference on Monday, choosing to respect Leavitt’s process. “I’m going to leave that to Sam’s team out of respect for him,” Dillingham stated. He continued, “I love Sam. He grew so much here. … Whatever his future holds I wish him nothing but the best. I absolutely want to see him succeed.”
Dillingham further emphasized his support for Leavitt on Tuesday, posting on X (formerly Twitter) about the quarterback’s accomplishments and predicting, “Going to succeed wherever he goes!!”
Leavitt Poised to be a Top Transfer Target
Leavitt is expected to be one of the most sought-after players in the transfer portal this offseason, likely attracting offers from numerous programs seeking a proven quarterback. His past success and potential make him a highly valuable asset.
Arizona State Looks to the Future
Looking ahead, Arizona State has future quarterback talent on the horizon. Highly-touted four-star recruit Jake Fette is slated to join the team as a freshman in 2026. Currently on the roster, former four-star recruit and backup Cameron Dyer provides immediate depth.
Dillingham expressed confidence in the program’s future at the quarterback position, stating, “I’m very, very confident we’re going to have a really good quarterback at Arizona State.”
