Israeli Strike Kills At Least 13 Near Lebanon Refugee Camp, Sparking New Tensions

At least 13 people were killed and four others injured in an Israeli military strike near the Ein el-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon, according to the country’s health ministry. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, underscores the escalating violence in the region and raises concerns about the potential for wider conflict.

Israel Claims Hamas Target, Hamas Denies Involvement

The Israeli military stated the strike targeted members of Hamas operating within a training compound in the Ein el-Hilweh area. According to the military, the location was utilized by Hamas to orchestrate attacks against Israel. However, Hamas vehemently rejected these claims, labeling them as “fabrication and lies.” A spokesperson for the group asserted they have “no military installations in the Palestinian camps in Lebanon,” and that the targeted site was merely an “open sports field.”

Escalating Conflict in Lebanon

This strike is part of a pattern of regular Israeli air strikes on locations within Lebanon that have been ongoing since efforts to end the conflict with the Iran-backed Hezbollah group stalled. While the majority of these strikes have focused on Hezbollah targets, Israel has also increasingly targeted Hamas operatives within the country. Images circulating online depict emergency workers responding at the entrance of Ein el-Hilweh, the largest Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon, while footage shows ambulances navigating the camp’s narrow streets amidst a large plume of smoke.

Civilian Impact and IDF Response

Initial reports suggest the strike impacted an area adjacent to a mosque, a location typically bustling with activity during the evening hours. The IDF maintained that “prior to the strike, measures were taken to reduce the chance of harm to civilians, including the use of precision munitions, aerial observations, and additional intelligence information.” Despite these precautions, the significant loss of life raises serious questions about the effectiveness of these measures and the potential for collateral damage.

Regional Context: Gaza and Hezbollah

The current escalation is deeply intertwined with the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths and the abduction of 251 hostages. Israel’s subsequent military response in Gaza has, according to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry, led to at least 69,169 Palestinian fatalities.

Fighting between Israel and Hezbollah intensified after the Lebanese group launched rockets toward Israeli positions on October 8, 2023, declaring their actions were in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. This followed a 13-month period of escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, culminating in a large-scale Israeli bombing campaign and ground incursion into southern Lebanon in October 2024. Lebanese authorities report that Israeli attacks have resulted in approximately 4,000 deaths, including many civilians, and the displacement of over 1.2 million residents. Israeli authorities have reported 80 soldier and 47 civilian deaths during the hostilities.

The latest strike near Ein el-Hilweh serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of the situation in Lebanon and the potential for further escalation as regional tensions continue to rise.
