The Financial Times newspaper revealed that “Israel launched 12 attacks on United Nations forces (Lebanon“>UNIFIL) in Lebanon,” noting that “15 peacekeepers were injured by white phosphorus.”
According to the newspaper’s report, “There are dozens of incidents in which the Israeli army attacked international forces in Lebanon. The Israeli army stormed a clearly marked United Nations base and is suspected of using the incendiary chemical white phosphorus at a distance close enough to injure 15 peacekeepers.”
The newspaper reported that “the Israeli army damaged several facilities and wounded soldiers stationed at border posts in southern Lebanon.” According to the newspaper, “the attacks sparked international condemnation.”
Human rights groups documented Israel’s use of white phosphorus in Lebanon over the past year, and said that its use is “illegal in populated areas under international law, but it is frequently used as a military tool, or as a weapon to expel opposition forces.”
The United Nations had demanded “the evacuation of its peacekeeping forces from southern Lebanon for their safety, while UNIFIL and the fifty countries that contribute to UNIFIL forces unanimously rejected this request.”
