Lee Dong-kyung Crowned K League 1 MVP, Eyes Future Challenges
Ulsan HD FC’s Lee Dong-kyung has been named the Most Valuable Player of the K League 1 for the 2025 season, marking a career milestone for the 28-year-old midfielder. The award was presented at the Hana Bank K-League 2025 awards Ceremony held at the Swiss Grand Hotel in Seoul on December 1st.
Lee’s recognition comes despite a challenging season for ulsan, which narrowly avoided relegation by finishing ninth in the league standings. Though, his extraordinary performance while on loan to Gimcheon Sangmu – were he played the majority of the season before returning to Ulsan – proved decisive in securing him the coveted MVP title.
“When I started playing soccer, I worked hard with my eyes set on a high place,” Lee stated following the ceremony. “With gratitude, I will now take a moment to catch my breath and move humbly and sincerely toward a higher place.”
The midfielder expressed his joy and relief at overcoming past difficulties. “I am so happy that I have forgotten all the difficult moments and days when I thought I was unlucky,” he shared at a subsequent press conference. When asked to elaborate on his vision for “higher places,” Lee explained that it encompassed both pursuing opportunities on larger stages and a commitment to personal growth.
Lee’s career path has included a stint in germany, playing on loan for Schalke and Hansa Rostock in 2022. He candidly described this period as “the most difficult time in my football career,” but also acknowledged its value. “The experience at that time was a great help in my future soccer,” he said, adding that navigating the challenges of playing abroad fostered significant personal development. He noted a growing awareness and empathy for fellow foreign players.
Looking ahead, Lee is focused on the upcoming North and Central America World Cup. “The World cup, which is my dream and goal as a soccer player, is next year,” he said. “It’s not long left. I have to choose and prepare more carefully. There are still 9 days left to play. I need to finish the season well and take time to think carefully.”
Currently, ulsan is preparing for an away match against Machida Zelbia (Japan) in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League elite on December 9th. however, Lee’s participation remains uncertain due to a rib injury sustained during a K League 1 match against Suwon FC. “It’s not good yet,” he admitted when questioned about his condition, adding that he will consult with doctors to determine his availability.
