On the 4th, the third week of the August 18th National Convention regional tour to decide the next leadership of the Democratic Party of Korea, Lee Jae-myung, the party’s representative candidate, recorded an overwhelming voter turnout of over 80% in Gwangju and Jeonnam. With a landslide victory in the Honam region, the political root of the Democratic Party, the atmosphere of ‘expansion’ (Lee Jae-myung is definitely the representative) is solidifying. However, as the voter turnout rate of party members in Gwangju and Jeonnam fell to the 20% range, the cumulative voter turnout rate also dropped to 26.47% based on the party representative.

The Democratic Party Election Commission announced the results of the Gwangju party member vote at the Kim Dae-jung Convention Center this morning, stating that this candidate recorded a voter turnout of 83.61%. This candidate continued his lead on this day, following his 84.79% voter turnout in the Jeonbuk region the day before. His rival candidate, Kim Du-kwan, received 14.56%, while Kim Ji-soo received only 1.81%.

The candidate described Gwangju as his “social mother” during the joint speech. “Gwangju made Lee Jae-myung, a factory worker who was no different from Ilbe (short for the extreme right-wing community Daily Best), reborn as a citizen who thinks about democracy,” he said. “You made the reckless Ilbe who criticized Gwangju into a fighter for human rights, peace, and democracy, and you raised him into the leader of the Democratic Party, the backbone of this country.”

Candidate Kim Du-kwan said, “If I become the party leader, I will raise many other presidential candidates, including this candidate,” and “There are Chief Secretary Im Jong-seok from Jeollanam-do, Park Yong-jin, Kim Bu-gyeom, and Lee Tan-hee from Jeollabuk-do, and we need to raise many candidates.” When Candidate Kim mentioned a candidate other than this candidate, there was booing at the scene. Candidate Kim also likened the Democratic Party’s largest pro-Myeong organization, the Democratic Innovation Conference, to ‘Hanahoe’ in a letter he sent to Democratic Party delegates that morning.

According to the results of the votes of the Jeonnam Party members tallied at the joint speech and tour primary held at the Naju Sports Complex in Jeonnam that afternoon, this candidate received 82.48%, candidate Kim Du-gwan 15.66%, and candidate Kim Ji-soo 1.87%, respectively.

However, there were also signs that interest in the convention was decreasing due to the atmosphere of ‘expansion’. On this day, the voter turnout rate for the party representative primary in the Gwangju area was 25.29%, and in the Jeonnam area, 23.17%. The previous day, the Jeonbuk area was 20.28%. The voter turnout rate for this round of primaries exceeded 40% only in Busan (42.07%) and Daegu/Gyeongbuk (52.23%), and in the rest of the areas, it was low at around 30%, dropping to a cumulative 26.47% as of the 4th. After the Jeonnam joint speech that day, the candidate only said about the low voter turnout rate, “There are regions with high and low voter turnouts, and it seems that there are various characteristics depending on the candidates.”

In the Supreme Council election, Min Hyung-bae, who had been in the lower ranks, came in first place in Gwangju with 27.77% of the votes. Min’s district is Gwangju. He was followed by Kim Min-seok (17.42%), Han Jun-ho (11.67%), Jeong Bong-ju (11.58%), Jeon Hyeon-hui (10.73%), Lee Eun-ju (9.04%), Kim Byeong-ju (8.31%), and Kang Seon-woo (3.48%).

In Jeonnam, Min took first place with 21.68%, and Kim Min-seok took second place with 17.38%. Candidates Han Jun-ho (12.51%), Jeong Bong-ju (12.12%), Jeon Hyeon-hui (11.95%), Lee Eun-ju (10.59%), Kim Byeong-ju (9.66%), and Kang Seon-woo (4.11%) followed.
