Rotterdam – Hundreds of campaign signs for the Leefbaar Rotterdam party have been vandalized, destroyed, or stolen in the weeks leading up to the March 18th municipal elections, according to party leader Ronald Buijt. The incidents, ranging from graffiti to outright theft, are occurring across the city, prompting concern and frustration within the party as they attempt to reach voters.
Buijt described the situation as unprecedented in his experience. “It’s happening everywhere,” he told regional broadcaster Rijnmond. “The worst of it is on the Maasboulevard, the Stadhoudersweg is too heavily affected and on the Kop van Zuid, all the signs were gone in a single day.” He estimates between 500 and 700 signs have been targeted, with some defaced with slogans like “fascist” and “Buijt out.” Leefbaar Rotterdam filed a police report last month regarding the vandalism.
The incidents are not isolated to Rotterdam. Similar acts of vandalism have been reported in other parts of the Netherlands, including Uden, where signs for the Jong Maashorst party were defaced, and Terneuzen, where more than half of the signs for Hart voor Terneuzen disappeared. In Schiedam, campaign materials for the CDA and Denk parties were also targeted. This suggests a broader trend of disruption targeting political advertising ahead of the elections.
A Response to Leefbaar Rotterdam’s Message?
Buijt believes the vandalism stems from opposition to his party’s platform. “Apparently, people are afraid of Leefbaar’s message and are trying to ridicule or criminalize it,” he said. “But our message stands firm: Rotterdammers first.” He expressed confidence that the incidents will not impact the election results, stating, “We will be the biggest party, whether our signs are defaced or not. We will not back down. We stand for our message.”
Leefbaar Rotterdam is responding by ordering a new batch of signs, which Buijt said will be placed higher to deter further vandalism. The party’s core message, as Buijt articulated, centers on prioritizing the interests of Rotterdam residents. He frames the election as a choice between Leefbaar Rotterdam and “the left,” a common rhetorical device in Dutch politics.
Buijt’s Background and Policy Focus
Ronald Buijt, 57, is the list leader for Leefbaar Rotterdam. He previously served as a city council member from 2006 to 2018, and as the party’s faction leader from 2016 to 2018. He also led several campaigns for the party when Marco Pastors and Joost Eerdmans were list leaders. According to his profile on the Leefbaar Rotterdam website, Buijt considers Pim Fortuyn, the controversial politician assassinated in 2002, to be his hero and a major influence.
Currently, Buijt serves as the alderman for Care, Elderly, and Youth Care in Rotterdam, a position he has held since 2022. In this role, he has focused on addressing issues such as homelessness and providing support for seniors. He has overseen initiatives to return or assist homeless Eastern European citizens, opened dozens of senior restaurants, and expanded housing options for the elderly through the construction of “home plus” apartments.
Broader Concerns About Political Discourse
The vandalism of campaign signs raises broader questions about the tone of political discourse and the potential for intimidation during election periods. While Buijt dismisses the incidents as stemming from fear of his party’s message, the acts themselves represent a disruption of the democratic process. The incidents also highlight the challenges political parties face in reaching voters when their materials are repeatedly targeted.
The Rotterdam police have not released information regarding any arrests or investigations related to the vandalism. It remains to be seen whether the incidents will escalate as the election date approaches. The party is proceeding with its campaign, despite the challenges, and remains confident in its message and its ability to connect with voters.
The next update on this story is expected following the municipal elections on March 18th, when the full extent of the impact of these incidents on the vote will develop into clear.
