A ship’s accidental contact with high-voltage power lines near Franeker,Netherlands, left approximately 25,000 homes in Leeuwarden and surrounding areas without electricity for several hours on Thursday. While power has been restored, meaningful infrastructure repairs are underway, and safety precautions remain in effect.
The incident occurred around 2:30 pm local time when a vessel operating with a crane made contact with the high-voltage cables spanning the Van Harinxmakanaal. Fortunately,no injuries were reported, but the collision caused ample damage to a high-voltage pylon and associated cabling, triggering the widespread outage. Network operator TenneT confirmed the power supply was fully restored around 9:30 pm.
Damage Assessment and Ongoing Repairs
Despite the restoration of power, tennet officials stated that the damaged electricity mast and cables require extensive repairs, scheduled to continue throughout the night and into Friday morning. Crews are currently working to assess the full extent of the damage and stabilize the affected infrastructure.
“The malfunction has now been remedied, but the damage to the electricity mast and the cables still have to be restored,” a company release confirmed.
Evacuations and Transportation Disruptions
As a precautionary measure, the local safety region initiated an evacuation of the immediate area surrounding the damaged pylon and nearby structures. Authorities cited concerns about the potential for the damaged mast to collapse, posing a risk to adjacent infrastructure.
“There is a risk that the mast falls and thus other masts in the area,” a spokesperson for the safety region explained.
The incident also caused significant disruptions to local transportation. A section of the ring road in Franeker was closed to traffic, and train service between Franeker and Harlingen was suspended. Dutch Railways announced that the disruption would continue until approximately 11:15 pm Thursday.
Stabilization and Restoration Timeline
TenneT plans to lay road plates near the damaged mast tonight to provide a stable base for repair operations. Tomorrow morning, a heavy lift operation will be undertaken to stabilize the damaged structure, allowing for the safe removal of the compromised lines. Authorities anticipate the evacuation order can be lifted Friday morning as the stabilization process progresses.
The incident underscores the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to accidental damage and the importance of robust safety protocols. while the immediate crisis has passed, the ongoing repairs highlight the complexities of maintaining a reliable power grid in a densely populated region.
