When it comes to heirs, the differences between the parties in the Bundestag appear to be enormous. At least that is what the heated debate that took place on the topic suggests.

The parties represented in the Bundestag have had a heated argument about the taxation of inheritances in Germany. Top representatives of the SPD, Greens, FDP, Union, Left and AfD repeatedly interrupted each other on Tuesday evening in the ZDF program “How are you, Germany,” some of them upset.

FDP leader Christian Lindner called for higher allowances for heirs because of the increased real estate prices. The problem: “The states have to agree, because the states are missing out on money,” said Lindner. He had a loud debate with the Saxon Prime Minister and deputy CDU chairman Michael Kretschmer about who was responsible for the current burden on real estate heirs – the traffic light coalition or its predecessor, the grand coalition of the Union and the SPD.

SPD leader Lars Klingbeil also called for higher allowances when inheriting real estate, but at the same time for a higher burden on large inheritances. Many rich people would like to give up, he said. “And if we guarantee that we put the money directly into education, for example, then that’s a small step compared to taxing millions of inheritances a little higher.”

AfD leader Tino Chrupalla called for a complete abolition of inheritance tax and doubted that the money raised would actually be put into education as Klingbeil suggested. Left leader Janine Wissler spoke out in favor of redistribution in favor of people who inherit nothing. Inheritance is currently a “sperm lottery” because no one can change which family they are born into.
