October 1, 2024
Libreville – October 1, 2024 – In line with their respective commitment to the fight against Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC) and the conservation of fauna and flora in Gabon, the NGOs Space for Giants (SFG) and Conservation Justice (CJ) have announced today. , Tuesday October 1, 2024, the signing of a fifteen-month cooperation agreement related to the monitoring and management of mobile electric fences in the provinces of Haut-ogooue, Ogooue-Lolo, Ngounié and Ogooue-lvindo.
The main objective of this collaboration agreement is to develop sustainable solutions to Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC) through the installation of mobile electric fences, to ensure the protection of community forests in the mentioned provinces. It will be achieved by developing a harmonious collaboration based on the technical specificities of each organization, in particular the methods of collaboration, the communication mechanisms and the methods to implement activities.
With its strong roots in mastering the installation of electric fences in Gabon, Space for Giants will intervene in areas that fall within its competence, deploying its technical know-how to install mobile electric fences in local communities.
To Eric CHEFOSKI, National Director of Space for Giants: “ We recognize that it is now incredible to address the conservation or protection of wildlife in Gabon without mentioning the human-elephant conflict. Aware of this reality, we enthusiastically welcome this partnership, as the needs of the local communities living in the intervention areas, where elephants regularly destroy food crops, are fully taken into account. This partnership is distinguished by a strong commitment to raising awareness, with a particular emphasis on providing communities with practical and immediate access to this challenge. ».
Conservation Justice will intervene in aspects related to the public aspect by identifying people who may benefit from electric fences and encouraging them to make requests to the competent administrations, in particular the Water and Forests administration, the Environment and Agriculture. As part of this collaboration, Conservation
Justice will also act on aspects of community awareness and monitoring and support for beneficiaries.
To Luc Mathot, Executive Director of Justice Conservation NGO: “ We cannot operate sustainably without the participation of local communities, and we are very committed to further strengthening this aspect. In particular, Human-Wildlife Conflict is constantly growing and is becoming a priority for all structures active in wildlife conservation and sustainable development. ».
In addition to the project’s target provinces, the collaboration between SFG and CJ could have an impact on other provinces depending on priorities and opportunities.
