Blue Jackets Struggle to Close Games, Fall to Pittsburgh Despite Strong Offense

The Columbus Blue Jackets continue to grapple with late-game collapses, despite a multi-goal performance and a strong offensive showing against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The team’s recent struggles to secure victories in regulation are becoming a central narrative, even as they accumulate points.
The Blue Jackets (11-9-5) suffered their fourth consecutive loss, going 0-1-3 over that stretch. Zach Werenski led the charge with a goal and an assist, supported by scores from Sean Monahan and Brendan Gaunce. Goaltender Jet Greaves stopped 20 shots.
Recurring Issues Plague Columbus
Columbus has found itself navigating overtime frequently, with eight of their last 11 games extending beyond regulation time. A concerning trend has emerged: the team has squandered leads in six of those contests. Their record in these extended games stands at 3-0-5, including a frustrating 1-0-3 mark while relinquishing a two-goal advantage late in four separate games.
“I’m not sure you guys (the media) are sick of asking about it,” a Blue Jackets player stated. “I’m sure fans are sick of seeing it. So, at the end of the day, it’s on us to just find a way to get a win and win in regulation and close the game out.”
The player acknowledged the team’s ability to earn points, but emphasized the need for improvement in the third period. “We’re getting points, and we still haven’t really played good enough in the third period, and we’re leading in almost every game. So, I really like what we have going on here. But, yeah, I mean, we’re sick of talking about it.”
Penguins Rally for Tie
Pittsburgh chipped away at the Blue Jackets’ lead throughout the game. Rust narrowed the gap to 3-2 just 13 seconds into the third period with a quick snap shot. The tying goal came at 8:28, courtesy of Crosby, who completed his second goal of the night after receiving a pass and breaking in alone on Greaves.
Pittsburgh coach Dan Muse highlighted the significance of Crosby’s goal. “Sid’s goal there was massive, obviously,” he said. “But I also thought we had more time there where we’re starting to put multiple shifts together.”
Crosby opened the scoring at 6:10 of the first period, redirecting a pass from Letang. The game ultimately ended in a tie, despite Columbus’ early offensive momentum.
The Blue Jackets’ inability to protect leads and secure regulation wins remains a critical issue that the team must address to translate potential into consistent success.
