Tjen’s ascent Continues with Fernandez Upset
Janice Tjen, the No. 1 women’s player in Indonesia, continued her impressive rise with a stunning 6-2, 7-6 (1) victory over the 22nd-seeded Leylah Fernandez of Canada. The 23-year-old Tjen, who has already secured one WTA singles title and three doubles championships, demonstrated the enhancement predicted by her coaches after reaching No.53 in the WTA singles rankings in november.
The match, lasting one hour and 43 minutes, saw Tjen control the pace with a powerful serve and aggressive net play. Statistically, tjen finished with four aces, 17 winners, six double faults, and 27 unforced errors. Fernandez, despite her seeding, struggled to find her rhythm, recording two aces, 16 winners, five double faults, and 28 unforced errors.
A key factor in Tjen’s success was her ability to capitalize on break point opportunities. She converted four of seven break points, and won four of ten return games, compared to Fernandez’s two of eight break points and two of ten return games. Tjen will now face Karolina Pliskova of Czechia in the next round.
Mboko and Jovic Secure Doubles Victory
In women’s doubles action, Victoria mboko of Toronto, the only Canadian woman to win her first-round singles match, teamed up with American Iva Jovic to defeat Ulrikke Eikeri of Norway and Ingrid Neel of Estonia 7-5, 6-3. The pair completed the victory in one hour and 31 minutes.
Mboko and Jovic showcased a dominant performance on serve, securing three aces and winning 70% of their points on first serve. They also excelled in return games, winning four of ten, while Eikeri and Neel managed only two of ten. Mboko and Jovic committed four double faults, and won 61% of their points on first serve.
Mboko and Jovic will now advance to face the winners of a match between Romania’s Sorana cirstea and Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya against the fourth-seeded pairing of Elise Mertens of Belgium and Shuai Zhang of China.
