A New Geralt, A Familiar Magic: ‘The Witcher’ Season 4 Divides Critics
Netflix’s fantasy epic, The Witcher, returns for a fourth season with a significant shift in its leading man, sparking a mixed reaction from early reviewers. With just two seasons remaining to conclude the series, the show has transitioned from Henry Cavill to Liam Hemsworth in the role of the iconic monster slayer, Geralt of Rivia. Season 4 is now streaming, and initial assessments suggest the casting change is a prominent, if not always seamless, element of the new episodes.
The transition has undeniably altered the dynamic of the show, with some critics finding Hemsworth’s presence jarring. “First and foremost, there is no getting around the Hemsworth in the room,” one reviewer noted. “Even as there is much else going on with Season 4’s new adventure and split storylines, his presence is the one element that continually sticks out like a sore thumb.”
However, the change isn’t universally viewed as detrimental. Another critic observed that “the switcheroo isn’t quite as jarring as one would think,” but cautioned that this may be due to Geralt feeling increasingly marginalized within his own narrative. The season’s structure, which sees Geralt (Hemsworth), his lover Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), and their ward Ciri (Freya Allen) embarking on largely separate storylines, contributes to this sense of fragmentation. The season feels, according to one assessment, “less like a gritty fantasy slash-em-up and more like homework.”
Despite the structural concerns, some reviewers believe Season 4 represents a creative resurgence for the series. “Overall, even as a brand-new lead takes the charge, The Witcher Season 4 has mostly reclaimed its magic,” a source at Variety reported. While acknowledging that one episode, “The Joy of Cooking,” feels like filler, the reviewer praised the season’s pacing, tone, and focus on the central trio, calling it “an essential building block” for the upcoming final season.
Adding to the evolving cast, Laurence Fishburne joins the ensemble this season, bringing a familiar face to genre fans. His character, Regis, offers Geralt a new confidant, encouraging him to embrace connection and community. “Geralt’s path…is a good one, shared nicely with his cohorts old and new,” one critic wrote, highlighting the character’s growing acceptance of others. The season also promises a significant arc for Yennefer, as she strives to assemble a sorceress army to confront Vilegfortz, who now controls all magical portal travel.
