The British musician Liam Payne, former member of the band One Direction, has died at the age of 31 in Argentina, the Buenos Aires police department announced.
“Liam James Payne, songwriter and guitarist, former member of the band One Direction, died today after falling from the third floor of a hotel” in the Palermo district of Buenos Aires, a police statement said.
The police were called to the CasaSur hotel at 17:04 (local time, 23:04 Greek time). An ambulance arrived seven minutes later, but paramedics only pronounced Payne dead.
The exact circumstances under which the tragic incident took place are being investigated.
La Nacion and Clarin newspapers say police were called to the hotel after reports of a “disturbance possibly under the influence of drugs and alcohol”.
Liam Payne rose to fame as a member of the pop group One Direction, along with Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson. The group rose to fame after finishing third on the British version of the music competition “X Factor” in 2010. One Direction broke up in 2016 and the band members went their separate ways.
On October 2, Liam Payne attended a concert with his former One Direction bandmate Niall Horan in Buenos Aires, according to Billboard magazine.
