ABU DHABI: Residents will be required to have a license to hire domestic workers after the new domestic workers law comes into effect in the UAE. In case of recruitment through recruitment office or through sponsors all related expenses will be borne. The new domestic law will come into effect in the UAE on December 15. The provisions of the new Act deal with all aspects related to domestic workers.

Illegal employment of domestic workers in the UAE is punishable by a minimum fine of AED 50,000. This will go up to a maximum of two lakh dirhams. Misuse of work permits issued for domestic workers or employment of a person below 18 years of age as a domestic worker will attract the same amount of fine.

Working illegally without obtaining a work permit, recruiting a domestic worker and then not giving them work, using the work permit obtained in the name of domestic workers for other purposes, terminating the operation of the recruiting agency without following the necessary procedures and not giving the rights to the workers and completing other legal procedures, etc. All these will be fined up to two lakh dirhams.
