Lifetime Channel Breaks New Ground with First Sex Scene in Holiday Movie
Lifetime Channel is breaking new ground this holiday season with the upcoming movie “A Cowboy Christmas Romance,” which features the franchise’s first-ever sex scene. The film, starring Jana Kramer and Adam Senn, is set to premiere on Dec. 9 and promises to add a new level of romance to the network’s traditional holiday lineup.
Tia Maggini, SVP of scripted content at Lifetime, spoke exclusively with Variety about the decision to include a sex scene in the upcoming movie. “We think that there’s an audience out there that’s hungry for grown-up romance, and we’re looking forward to adding some smolder to the usual holiday sugar and spice,” Maggini said. “We love trying new things, and we’re excited about this new ‘first’ for us for a holiday movie.”
Kramer also teased the scene during a recent episode of iHeartRadio’s “Whine Down” podcast, revealing that it takes place on a bed of hay. Despite pushing the limits, Kramer expressed her happiness that the network did not cut any of the scene, maintaining its family-friendly nature.
Sarah Drew, who wrote the movie, also expressed her satisfaction with how the scene turned out, noting that another sexy scene she wrote for the film also made the final cut. “It all came out so beautifully, but especially the scene in the kitchen,” Drew explained. “I put it all in there, so I was like, ‘Don’t take the steam and the sex away from me. I wrote it on purpose, I want it in there.’”
Kramer, who has starred in eight Lifetime movies, emphasized that “A Cowboy Christmas Romance” sets itself apart from the typical holiday movie. “We barely mention the word ‘Christmas.’ There’s no gingerbread bake-off, there’s no festival, that town that’s going to hell and you gotta save it,” she said. “The only thing was, like, [my character] coming back and seeing Adam or his character… Those cozy feelings happen, but it’s all mixed up with real family stuff and identity stuff and relationship stuff.”
With the addition of the first-ever sex scene in a Lifetime holiday movie, “A Cowboy Christmas Romance” is sure to bring a new level of romance and excitement to this year’s “It’s a Wonderful Lifetime” lineup.
