The events dedicated to the 876th anniversary of Moscow have started at the Moscow Cultural Center “Dom Moskvi” in Yerevan, within the framework of which the 4th annual chess tournament organized with the Chess Academy of Armenia and the opening of an exhibition dedicated to the history of Moscow took place.

More than 150 chess players competed in 13 round-robin rounds. There were 6 athletes competing with 8 international grandmasters in the finals. Among the participants was chess player, grandmaster (2017), under-16 world champion (2016) Hayk Martirosyan, who recently took third place at the World Blitz Chess Championship in Almaty and second place at the Timisoara Grand Prix Rapid tournament.

“It is nice to participate in such tournaments. After all, this is another opportunity to play and compete with friends,” Hayk Martirosyan said.

“Every year, the scale of the tournament is increasing. For the 4th year, we have been closely cooperating with the “Dom Moskvi” center in Yerevan. The finalists played with the strongest chess players of Armenia. I am glad that there is an opportunity to hold such events, through which the interest in chess increases”, said Smbat Lputyan, the first deputy president of the Chess Federation of Armenia.

Alexander Konyuk, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Armenia, also tried his hand at the semi-finals of the tournament.

“I have been playing chess for 50 years, but not as professionally as the chess players present here. My love for chess dates back to my childhood. Armenia is a unique country where wonderful chess players are born,” Alexander Konyuk said.

Emin Ohanyan (1st place), Tigran Petrosyan (2nd place) and Hayk Martirosyan (3rd place) won in a hard fight. The participants were awarded with certificates, trophies and medals.

“It is a great honor that such professionals and recognized masters participate in our tournament. We are trying to do our best to organize the tournament at a high level. We hope that cooperation with the Chess Academy of Armenia will continue to develop, and the number of participants in our tournament will increase year by year,” said Vahram Karapetyan, the general director of the “Dom Moskvi” center in Yerevan.

“Today, Moscow is one of the fastest developing metropolises in the world. It is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful and comfortable cities, which attracts many talented people. There are not a few Armenians among them, who have contributed to Moscow’s prosperity throughout its history. It is not for nothing that many historical buildings built by Armenians can still be seen in the capital,” said Vahram Karapetyan, director general of the “Dom Moskvi” center in Yerevan.

“It is a unique exhibition of its kind, here you can see how Moscow has changed, get acquainted with archival materials. I think everyone will discover new and interesting facts about Moscow,” said Denis Nazarov, attache of the Russian ambassador to Armenia.
