Thiruvananthapuram: Health Minister Veena George on Monday said that the DMOs should seek prior permission to respond to the Omicron issue. The minister clarified that the DMOs will not be banned from the media and will not reconsider the action taken in the circular. The minister said that it was a lightning visit to Attappady and would not respond to the Kottathara hospital superintendent’s remark and would continue to visit government hospitals.

The Department of Health said that only the Minister of Health or the Director of Health should disclose information on the Omicron issue and that DMOs should obtain prior approval and respond. The directive was issued in the wake of Kozhikode DMO Omicron’s suspicion. Kozhikode DMO Dr. Ummer Farooq was also given a show cause notice. Unnecessary fears have been raised and an explanation is needed in this regard.
