Eli Lilly to Invest $6 Billion in Huntsville, Alabama Manufacturing Facility

Alabama is poised to become a major hub for pharmaceutical innovation and manufacturing with Eli lilly and Company’s proclamation of a $6 billion investment in a new advanced facility in Huntsville.The project, revealed on Tuesday, is projected to create 450 direct jobs and an estimated 3,000 construction jobs, marking the largest initial investment in the state’s history.
A New Era for Alabama’s Bioscience Sector
The Huntsville site will focus on the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) – the core components of medicines – specifically small molecule synthetic and peptide medicines. This facility represents the third of four new U.S. sites Lilly plans to establish,underscoring a strategic commitment to bolstering domestic manufacturing capacity. A key product slated for production at the Huntsville location is orforglipron, Lilly’s investigational oral drug for obesity, currently awaiting regulatory approval.
“Huntsville and our entire state have a proven legacy of innovation, and there is no better home for Lilly than right hear in Alabama,” stated Governor Kay Ivey. “Our roots in the biosciences industry run deep, and Alabama’s contributions to this burgeoning sector continue.” She further emphasized the potential for Alabamians to contribute to groundbreaking advancements in healthcare, adding, “We will ensure this great company achieves their mission of improving the health and wellbeing of people all around the contry and globe.”
Strategic Location and Advanced Technology
Construction is scheduled to commence in 2026, with the facility anticipated to be fully operational by 2032. Lilly’s decision to locate in Huntsville was influenced by the city’s established track record in science and innovation, coupled with its skilled workforce and advanced manufacturing capabilities.The chosen 260-acre site, located along Interstate 565 near Exit 3, also benefits from its proximity to the HudsonAlpha institute for Biotechnology, a leading bioscience campus focused on workforce advancement and research.
The new facility will integrate cutting-edge technologies, including machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), digitally integrated monitoring systems, and advanced data analytics. According to a company release,digital automation will be central to streamlining operations and ensuring a consistent supply of safe,high-quality medicines. The project aims to set new standards for sustainable manufacturing practices within the pharmaceutical industry.
Economic Impact and Workforce Development
The economic benefits extend far beyond the direct jobs created. Lilly estimates that for every dollar invested, the project will generate up to $4 in additional economic activity within the local community. The facility’s manufacturing operations are also expected to stimulate growth in related sectors, including logistics, retail, and supply chain management.

Alabama Industrial Development Training (AIDT), the state’s primary workforce development agency, will play a crucial role in establishing a dedicated training center to equip the local workforce with the necessary skills. The Tennessee Valley authority (TVA) also expressed its support, emphasizing its commitment to fostering economic growth and quality jobs throughout the region.

Lilly chair and CEO David A. Ricks highlighted the strategic importance of this investment in strengthening the resilience of the U.S. pharmaceutical supply chain. “Today’s investment continues the onshoring of active pharmaceutical ingredient production, strengthening supply chain resilience and reliable access to medicines for patients in the U.S.”
Alabama’s bioscience sector currently generates an estimated $7.3 billion in annual economic impact, supporting over 1,800 enterprises and employing more than 15,000 individuals. This latest investment solidifies Alabama’s position as a global leader in biotechnology and underscores its commitment to fostering a pro-business habitat.
