Lilly’s #gutbehandelt: Berlin Exhibit Challenges Obesity Stigma & Promotes Understanding

by Grace Chen

Berliners and visitors will have the opportunity to explore the complexities of obesity in a new way this week, as pharmaceutical company Lilly Deutschland unveils an interactive experience designed to challenge perceptions and foster understanding. Opening today, March 3, 2026, the “Mach den ersten Schritt” (Take the First Step) exhibit at the Masumi Space on Kurfürstendamm aims to move beyond the common stigmas surrounding the condition and highlight its status as a treatable, chronic illness. The launch coincides with World Obesity Day, observed on March 4th.

Obesity is a significant public health challenge, affecting approximately one in five adults in Germany, a prevalence mirrored in the capital city of Berlin. However, despite growing scientific understanding of the biological factors contributing to obesity, those affected often face societal prejudice, and isolation. This new exhibit seeks to address that disconnect, offering a space for empathy and education. The initiative, spearheaded by Lilly Deutschland’s #gutbehandelt campaign, intends to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and accessible care for those living with obesity.

Beyond Blame: Reframing the Conversation Around Obesity

The Masumi Space installation isn’t a traditional medical display. Instead, visitors will be guided through an immersive experience designed to illustrate the emotional and social burdens carried by individuals with obesity. A central feature, the “Tunnel of Isolation,” aims to evoke the feelings of stigmatization and judgment that many experience daily. The exhibit’s core message is a shift in focus – away from the narrative of personal failing and toward recognizing obesity as a complex medical condition requiring comprehensive treatment.

“Obesity is a chronic, treatable disease – and yet many people experience a lack of understanding and support in their everyday lives,” explained Dr. Alexander Horn, Managing Director of Lilly Deutschland, in a statement released today. “#gutbehandelt stands for respectful, unbiased treatment and prevention in the best sense: providing early orientation and support so that people can take the first step towards professional care.”

The Biology of Weight: Challenging Conventional Wisdom

The exhibit also emphasizes the multifaceted nature of obesity, moving beyond simplistic notions of willpower. Dr. Felix Berndt, known as “DocFelix” for his medical insights shared online, underscored the biological underpinnings of the condition. “Obesity isn’t simply a matter of willpower – it’s a multifactorial disease,” he stated. “Genes, hormones, sleep, stress, and even the gut-brain axis influence our hunger, satiety, and how our bodies store energy. It’s a complex system, and focusing on just one factor isn’t enough.”

This understanding is crucial for fostering a more empathetic and effective approach to treatment. PD Dr. Tim Hollstein, a metabolic researcher, believes a shift in perspective can significantly improve the patient-physician relationship. “Treatment on an equal footing begins with the first contact in the practice,” he said. “By combining empathy with medical knowledge, One can alleviate the fear of judgment that many people with obesity experience. Our goal must be an environment where people feel safe and medically taken seriously – that’s the foundation for any therapeutic success.”

Self-Compassion and a New Approach to Nutrition

The exhibit promotes a sense of self-agency and encourages individuals to approach their health with kindness rather than self-criticism. Dr. Silja Schäfer, a nutritional medicine specialist, advocates for a reframing of dietary approaches. “Nutrition isn’t a tool for discipline, but a valuable support for a chronic condition like obesity,” she explained. “Being #gutbehandelt means treating yourself with care instead of strictness.”

The exhibit’s motto, “Mach den ersten Schritt,” serves as a call to action, encouraging individuals to seek help and prioritize their well-being. The organizers emphasize that seeking support is not a sign of weakness, but rather an active step toward improving quality of life.
