Expects multiple operations

Lindsey Vonn is facing multiple surgeries after suffering a complex lower leg fracture in a fall during the Olympic downhill race on Sunday. The 41-year-old confirmed the injury in a Monday evening Instagram post, stating that prior ligament tears didn’t contribute to the accident.
Vonn remains hospitalized at Ospedale Ca’ Foncello in Treviso, Italy, where she underwent a second operation on Monday, according to the Italian news agency Ansa. She is currently surrounded by members of the U.S. team.
Despite her injury, Vonn managed to offer congratulations to teammate Breezy Johnson for her Olympic victory. Before being taken to the hospital, her first thought was to acknowledge Johnson’s achievement, a gesture highlighted by her coach, Aksel Lund Svindal, on Instagram.
A Message of Support and a Father’s Concern
Vonn initially received treatment at the hospital in Cortina d’Ampezzo on Sunday before being transferred approximately 62 miles to Treviso for further care. Doctors there operated on the fracture sustained after just 13 seconds of the race.
Svindal, the 2018 Olympic downhill champion, shared on Instagram that Vonn’s focus on Johnson’s success, even in her own moment of crisis, demonstrated “true character.”
However, Vonn’s father, Alan Kildow, has expressed a firm opinion regarding his daughter’s future in the sport. “She’s 41 years old and this is the end of her career,” Kildow told the Associated Press on Monday. “As long as I still have a say in this, Lindsey won’t ski race any more.”
A Strong Spirit, But a Difficult Road Ahead
Kildow described his daughter as a “very strong personality” who understands the extent of her injuries and is coping well. He emphasized that the four-time World Cup champion and 2010 Olympic gold medalist is “really, really strong,” but will not be returning to the Winter Games this year, even as a spectator.

On Monday morning, Vonn acknowledged a journalist’s post on X, writing, “Thank you, Dan!” to Dan Walker, who had praised her performance despite the fall.
