Lindsey Vonn turns in two more solid performances on her return from skiing retirement.
After a decent comeback in the hills the day before, the former pace leader and Olympic champion finished 24th and 19th in the two FIS Super-gs at Copper Mountain on Sunday the fastest twice, it was just over two seconds each time.
The races in the US state of colorado were FIS events and therefore below World Cup level. However, there were plenty of top athletes at the start of the race ahead of next weekend’s Women’s Speed Cycling World Cup final in Beaver Creek. In the two downhill runs on Saturday, Vonn finished 24th and 27th. It was their first race in 2,127 days.
“This is just the beginning and the way I ski is more important now than ever,” Vonn said via the X platform after her return on Saturday. Vonn, who has been plagued by many injuries during her career, drives with artificial knee joints. Before her retirement in February 2019, she had won 82 World Cup races, Olympic gold in 2010 and two world titles, among other things.
Vonn wants to compete in World Cup races again this winter as well. It was recently said that she wanted to compete in the speed events in Beaver Creek as a precursor and then a week later in the Super-G races in St. Moritz.
