But deep in Israeli basketball. One of the prominent figures in the industry, coach and former player Lior Liubin, passed away today (Monday) when he was only 46 years old and after a long battle with a serious illness.

Raz, Liubin’s wife, said goodbye in tears at the funeral: “My husband, my love. I so wanted the end to be good and for us to grow old together. When we started dating it was hard for me to understand how to eat you. From the first moment you were different, you were so different. More than once throughout Over the years I would think to myself, “Why do you belong here?” You are an angel who fell from heaven. Too honest, too good, too humble, too wise and too compassionate. Too genuine. A man of Torah, a man of action and above all a man of family. I was so proud that you are mine In front of anyone who wanted to hear.”

“I would tell you about the husband you were, about the way you made me the queen of the world. You believed that if it was good for me, then it was good for you. Everything you did in life was to make me happy and smile. One soul, how much I admired you. I admired everything you did, you loved studying Torah so much At night before going to bed you would fall asleep with Torah lectures and I would eagerly wait to hear from you the morals of the words of wisdom. How wise you were.”

“What a father you were, you raised daughters with such values, you never gave up on them in competitions befitting an athlete. Ariel was your prince from the first moment, from the first moment you taught him to score. It’s so sad. Even though basketball was your whole world, you said that for you, family is life and everything else It’s a waste of time. We were always in the first place. Every part of my body hurts. I hurt so much. Thank you for teaching me what true love is, you also taught me inner peace. Not trying to please anyone, just being you. You taught me a happy relationship and modesty. Unfortunately I didn’t need that moment to realize how loved you were. I miss you already, come in my dreams. Rest in peace, I wish I could see you smile one more time with the sun in your eyes. The world was so beautiful with you. I always loved you And I always love.”

Liubin’s daughter said goodbye to her father: “My father was the best man in everything. The smartest, the nicest and he taught me so much in this life. He was just such a good person. I loved him and I still love him so much. He would take me down before kindergarten and they used to make me a contest about who loves whom more. We started with “I love you to the roof and back” and continued to “I love you to the moon and back.” We said “I love you more” and “I love you more”. He was So perfect. He was smart and he taught me to do what I want in my own way.”

“He taught me to achieve all my goals because he did it himself. I miss the moments on Fridays after Kiddush and after he explained another story to me and my sister. These simple moments when we sit and watch basketball, and I just enjoyed being around him and around everyone. “I So happy that I was able to gain so many experiences and memories with him.”

Liubin started his career in the youth department of Maccabi RG and then in the senior team. He later played in Maccabi Petah Tikva and then went on to stints in Maccabi and Hapoel Tel Aviv. In 2004, Liubin went to play overseas for the first time, when he signed with the Ukrainian Mariupol and then played two short terms At Apollon Patras and CSKA Sofia.

Towards the 2007/08 season, Liubin agreed on his return to Maccabi RG, but this move ultimately did not materialize. Later Liubin agreed on joining Afula, but due to medical reasons this move also did not materialize and he decided to retire from active play with a championship and a cup in his sights Maccabi Tel Aviv (2003), Taglit of the Season title (1999), King of Assists title (2000) and King of Steals title (2001, 2002).

After retirement, Liubin began a coaching career. First in the youth department of Maccabi RG, the team he grew up in, and then as Oded Ketch’s assistant in Hapoel Gilboa/Galil – with whom he won an unforgettable championship. With Ketch’s departure to Hapoel Jerusalem, Liubin was appointed head coach of the team and carried it all the way to the Final Four In his first season as head coach – when at the same time he collected two consecutive wins in the Balkan league championship.

Liubin managed to coach Holon and Maccabi Ashdod for a short term, but was unable to leave a mark – and so his path was paved to become the assistant coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv. He even served as a temporary coach after the dismissals of Erez Edelstein and Rami Hadar, but then returned to the position of assistant coach – until he returned In 2019 to Gilboa/Galil as head coach. Liubin managed to return the northern team to the semi-final status of the Final Four, and after losing there to Maccabi Tel Aviv he returned to work as Oded Ketch’s assistant – this time at Panathinaikos.

Although the two won the championship and the Greek Cup, their contracts were not renewed and Luvin returned to Israel and signed as head coach of Ness Ziona in place of Brad Greenberg – with whom he won the Balkan league championship. And after one season he found himself as the coach of Hapoel BS, which he recently left for medical reasons and was replaced by Yoav Shamir.

In parallel with his work in the Premier League, in the summer of 2014, Liubin was appointed as Erez Edelstein’s assistant in the Israeli team and took part in EuroBasket 2015 – in which the team reached the round of 16. At the end of 2015, Liubin was appointed coach of the Israeli national team up to the age of 19.
