Apple Faces Exodus of Top Executives as Design Chief Jumps to Meta

A wave of departures is unsettling the tech giant, with key figures leaving for rivals and raising questions about Apple’s future direction.

Apple is experiencing a significant talent drain, with a string of high-profile executives abandoning the company for competitors and new ventures. The latest, and perhaps most notable, is Alan Dye, Apple’s Vice President of Human Interface Design – the architect behind the controversial “Liquid Glass” aesthetic – who is moving to Meta. This exodus, coupled with lackluster performance of recent Apple products, is fueling speculation about the company’s leadership and innovation pipeline.

Meta Lands Apple’s Interface Design Lead

Dye’s move to Meta represents a major win for Mark Zuckerberg’s company. He will lead a “new design studio” focused on the integration of hardware, software, and artificial intelligence for Meta’s interfaces, reporting directly to Chief Technology Officer Andrew “Boz” Bosworth. This aggressive recruitment underscores Zuckerberg’s commitment to investing heavily in talent, even poaching from Apple, OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google, as he pursues dominance in the emerging fields of smart glasses and AI-powered computing.

A Pattern of Departures at Apple

Dye’s departure is not an isolated incident. Just this week, Apple announced that John Giannandrea, Senior Vice President of Machine Learning and AI Strategy – the executive tasked with revitalizing Siri – will be retiring in spring 2026. Former COO Jeff Williams recently announced his own retirement, and Abidur Chowdhury, an industrial designer instrumental in the development of the iPhone Air, has also left for an unnamed AI company.

Looking further back, the departures become even more pronounced. Jony Ive, Apple’s former Chief Design Officer, left in 2019 to establish his own firm, LoveFrom, which is now reportedly working on a secret AI gadget for OpenAI. Ive’s successor, Evans Hankey, followed suit in 2023, also joining LoveFrom. The firm has actively recruited former Apple designers and engineers for its OpenAI projects.

Vision Pro and Liquid Glass Fail to Ignite

Dye’s exit is particularly significant given his leadership role in the development of visionOS, the operating system for the Apple Vision Pro headset, and the implementation of Liquid Glass across Apple’s platforms. However, neither initiative has been well-received. The Vision Pro, priced at $3,500, has failed to launch the “spatial computing” era, with reports of weak sales and limited consumer interest in Apple Stores. Similarly, Liquid Glass on iOS 26 and macOS 26 has drawn criticism for its poor legibility, prompting Apple to introduce settings to reduce the effect.

Tim Cook Downplays the Talent Drain

Despite the growing list of departures, CEO Tim Cook attempted to downplay the situation in a statement to Bloomberg. “Design is fundamental to who we are at Apple, and today, we have an extraordinary design team working on the most innovative product lineup in our history,” he said. Speculation is mounting that Apple’s head of hardware, John Ternus, could be a potential successor to Cook, who is 65 and may retire as early as next year.

However, observers are questioning who remains of the “old guard” at Apple, beyond Cook and Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi. As one analyst noted, the current situation begs the question: “What the hell is going on at Apple?” Perhaps, it’s time for fresh faces to help Apple “Think Different” again.
