WELT: Your character buys one of these glass eyes and wears it as a piece of jewelry on a necklace. Did that happen for real?

Müller: A doctor kicked me out of his office because of it. I don’t know what that reminded him of. Maybe his grandfather was blind, maybe one of his relatives lost his eyesight during the war. No idea. I don’t think I could wear something like that anymore either. Back then it was provocation. If you live in complete bondage, then there is a permanent desire for freedom. This leads to compensatory actions. It can’t be any other way. Oppression provokes gestures to resist it. I also wore my hair very short and dyed red at the time. Of course, all this had to do with the situation in the country.

WELT: When and how did you realize that you were living under a dictatorship?
