Timothy Busfield, ‘At the White House’ Actor, Faces Child Abuse Allegations
An arrest warrant was issued on January 9th for actor Timothy Busfield, best known for his roles in “At the White House” and as the husband of “Little House on the Prairie” star Melissa Gilbert, on charges of criminal sexual contact with a minor and child abuse. The allegations stem from incidents involving two 11-year-old twin boys hired for his series, “The Cleaning Lady.”
The case, unfolding in Albuquerque County, New Mexico, began with a report from a physician at the University of New Mexico Hospital to child protective services in late 2024. This triggered an investigation that ultimately led to the issuance of the warrant. According to documents reviewed by authorities, one of the children alleges the abuse began when he was approximately seven years old.
The warrant details accusations of repeated inappropriate touching of the children’s private parts, with the alleged perpetrator reportedly asking them to refer to him as “Uncle Tim.” A social services agent noted in the case file that one of the children is experiencing frequent nightmares and exhibits symptoms of post-traumatic stress consistent with the alleged abuse.
Busfield, 68, vehemently denies the accusations, claiming the parents of the alleged victims are motivated by their children’s removal from “The Cleaning Lady.” Records indicate a previously amicable relationship between the actor and the parents. However, his defense is complicated by a prior allegation of sexual assault. In 1994, a 17-year-old extra on the film “Little Big” accused Busfield of similar misconduct. That case was resolved through an out-of-court settlement, precluding criminal prosecution.
The high profile of those involved has amplified the attention surrounding the case. Busfield’s career spans decades, including an Emmy Award win in 1991 for his work on “Thirtysomething,” alongside prominent roles in “At the White House” and “At the End of the Dream” with Kevin Costner. He has since transitioned into producing and directing, establishing himself as a significant figure in the Hollywood industry.
Adding another layer of complexity, Busfield’s wife, Melissa Gilbert, has publicly condemned sexual abuse of minors. On November 15th, she shared her own experiences on social media, reflecting on a concerning encounter during her time on “Little House on the Prairie” with a 23-year-old actor. “I was a child, I was 15,” she wrote, highlighting the vulnerability of young performers. A close friend of Gilbert revealed to investigators that “Mélissa will never doubt the word of a child, even if it is her husband,” and indicated she has begun divorce proceedings.
Warner Bros., the production company behind “The Cleaning Lady,” has affirmed its full cooperation with law enforcement. According to a company release, “The health and safety of our cast and crew are always our top priority… We take all allegations of misconduct very seriously and have cooperated and will continue to cooperate with law enforcement.”
Inspector Marvin Kirk Brown, leading the investigation, declined to comment on specifics but emphasized that the issuance of an arrest warrant does not equate to guilt. “The issuance of an arrest warrant constitutes neither a conviction nor an admission of guilt,” he stated. The warrant authorizes police to arrest Busfield if he does not voluntarily surrender within 48 hours. Following a likely period in police custody, a preliminary hearing will be scheduled to formally present the charges and determine conditions for his release.
