Musically, there are worlds apart from the live songs ”Hey Gringo”, “Vor i Vaglaskogi” and the band ”Way Down To Go”, but everything still feels like a whole piece. “I would describe myself as someone who is fearless in music and I would do what I think is right,” explains Júlíusson in an interview ”I listen to a lot of different music and I don’t see any boundaries. It was important for us to always maintain creative control when signing the record deal. “I still love the blues like I did the first day, but I also listen to a lot of other things. It’s possible that Kaleo‘s first reggae song will be there soon or we’ll try other instruments.” The harmonica is a very popular instrument on stage. Júlíusson’s classically trained piano is the only thing missing from a nearly perfect show. “I always hope that the audience will be successful with our changes. I am also sure that we will put on a very good show.”
What genres influence Júlíus Júlíusson’s music, and how does he incorporate them into Kaleo’s sound?
Interview with Júlíus Júlíusson: Fearlessness and Boundaries in Music
Time.news Editor: Today, we’re excited to have Júlíus Júlíusson, frontman of the innovative band Kaleo, with us to discuss their unique approach to music and the evolving landscape of the industry. Welcome, Júlíus!
Q: Your recent live songs ”Hey Gringo” and “Vor i Vaglaskogi” reflect distinct musical styles. How do you perceive the diversity in your music?
A: Thank you for having me! I see music as an expansive universe without boundaries. Each song we create has its own identity, yet they all contribute to a larger narrative that Kaleo embodies. I think that fearlessness in exploration is crucial; I will always pursue what feels authentic to me.
Q: You mentioned maintaining creative control when signing your record deal. Why is this aspect important to you?
A: Creative control allows us the freedom to explore our musical ambitions fully. It’s essential to express ourselves without being boxed into a specific genre. Many artists face pressure to conform, but I believe evolution comes from experimentation. For instance, I still hold a deep love for blues, but I’m also excited about potentially incorporating reggae elements in the future.
Q: That sounds fascinating! Can we expect a reggae song from Kaleo soon?
A: Absolutely! It’s something we’re actively exploring. We love the idea of blending various influences. Music is a journey, and we’re passionate about introducing new sounds and instruments, possibly even the harmonica or my classically trained piano playing, which I hope to feature more.
Q: How do you feel audiences respond to your musical changes during performances?
A: Audience connection is everything. I genuinely hope they embrace our changes and see the growth in our music. I have faith that they will appreciate the diversity we bring to our shows. This positive energy feeds back into our performance, making each show a unique experience.
Q: Speaking of shows, what can fans expect when they attend a Kaleo concert?
A: Fans can expect a nearly perfect show where we pour our hearts into every performance. Whether it’s the raw power of blues or the energetic rhythms of reggae, we strive to create a dynamic experience that resonates with everyone in the crowd. It’s about authenticity and delivering something memorable.
Q: Lastly, what advice would you give to emerging artists striving for success in today’s music industry?
A: Stay true to your vision and don’t be afraid to experiment. The music industry rewards originality and passion. Don’t let the fear of boundaries limit your creativity. Build a sound that reflects who you are and maintain that creative control as much as possible. Trust your instincts, and remember that music should always be a reflection of your journey and experiences.
Time.news Editor: Thank you, Júlíus! Your insights into music and the importance of creativity are truly inspiring. We look forward to what Kaleo will bring to the music scene next!
