Liverpool Faces Defensive Urgency: $83M Defender Targeted as Wharton Rumors Dismissed

Liverpool has less than a week to address critical squad needs in the January transfer window, with a potential move for Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet gaining traction amid growing concerns over defensive injuries. The club has swiftly refuted reports of an agreement with Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, signaling a clear prioritization of bolstering the back line.

Liverpool’s recent dip in form, culminating in a drop out of the Premier League’s top four, coupled with a fresh injury concern for Joe Gomez, has prompted a reevaluation of manager Arne Slot’s previously cautious approach to mid-season acquisitions.

Jacquet Emerges as Key Defensive Target

According to renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool is actively pursuing Jeremy Jacquet, the 20-year-old center-back from Ligue 1 side Rennes. The French club is reportedly demanding around €70 million ($83M) for the player, though they may prefer to facilitate a transfer at the end of the current season.

Rennes is open to sanctioning a sale this month, with an agreement potentially allowing Jacquet to remain with the club until the summer. This strategy would provide Rennes with immediate financial benefit while allowing them to retain the player’s services for the remainder of the campaign. The Daily Mail previously reported that Liverpool was monitoring Jacquet “from afar,” suggesting a growing interest in the promising defender.

However, Liverpool faces stiff competition for Jacquet’s signature, with Chelsea and Bayern Munich also reportedly in the race. A senior official stated that while Liverpool is exploring options, Chelsea appears to be currently leading the pursuit.

Liverpool.com analysts emphasize the urgency of securing a center-back this window. “The club cannot let this current window end without having a center-back signed and ready to join immediately,” they noted. “The Reds will be taking an almighty risk if they don’t bolster the back line during this final week, especially after Joe Gomez’s injury at the weekend.”

Wharton Speculation Quashed

Contrary to reports circulating on social media, Liverpool has dismissed claims of reaching an agreement with Adam Wharton, the 21-year-old midfielder from Crystal Palace. The Liverpool Echo confirmed that the club is not actively pursuing the player, despite a widely shared report suggesting a five-year contract had been negotiated.

Liverpool.com analysts found the initial report dubious. “The Wharton claim did seem to come out of nowhere, and it would be strange for a deal like that to only come out from one source on social media without it being reported elsewhere,” they observed.

While acknowledging Wharton’s potential for a future move, analysts believe that defense remains the immediate priority for Liverpool. “Midfield shouldn’t be a priority for Liverpool right now. Defense has to come first, before potentially looking at new wingers.”

Fans can now purchase Liverpool’s 2025/26 season home and away kits, the first under the club’s new partnership with Adidas, at LFC.com and Fanatics.com.

As the January transfer window nears its close, Liverpool’s focus remains firmly fixed on reinforcing its defensive options, with Jeremy Jacquet emerging as the primary target in a rapidly evolving situation.
