Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has concluded his first pre-season tour of the United States, a trip that highlighted the emergence of young talent but exposed significant gaps in the squad. The tour featured victories over Sunderland in Nashville and Wrexham in New York, though it ended with a 4-2 loss to Leeds in Chicago, according to Theguardian.
Trey Nyoni Emerges as Tour Standout
Midfielder Trey Nyoni was identified as the player of the tour by some distance, according to The New York Times. The 19-year-old, formerly of Leicester City, grew in confidence throughout the three matches, particularly during a first-half performance against Leeds where he won possession and maintained the team’s offensive pressure.
Nyoni appeared comfortable with Iraola’s instructions to quickly find forward options, utilizing intelligent movement to create space. While he made six league appearances from the bench under previous manager Arne Slot last season, his recent form suggests a stronger claim to remain with the first team rather than being loaned out. Other academy prospects who impressed Iraola during the tour included Lewis Koumas, Kieran Morrison, Luke Chambers, Talla Ndiaye, and Ndukwe.
Squad Gaps and Transfer Pressures
Despite the success of youth players, the tour revealed “glaring gaps” in the roster. Liverpool has yet to replace Mohamed Salah, whose departure was announced in March, despite talks to end his contract a year early beginning five months prior. Additionally, the club remains light at right-back due to a serious knee injury suffered by Conor Bradley.
The team’s vulnerability was evident in the second half against Leeds, where midfield control and attacking thrust collapsed after Nyoni, Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, and Rio Ngumoha were all substituted at the break. This period also saw the return of recurring issues from last season, specifically a tendency to “switch off” and problems with set-pieces.
Iraola’s Integration Challenges
The head coach’s ability to implement his front-foot, intense style was limited by a lack of available personnel. For most of the tour, Iraola was without eight first-team players on World-Cup holidays and six others due to injury, including Joe Gomez, who sustained an injury during the US trip.
Due to these absences, Iraola had not yet met or coached several key players since his appointment nearly two months ago, including:

These players are scheduled to acquaint with the coach when the squad reports for training on Wednesday, following their Monday morning return to the UK.
Player Performance and Outlook
Dominik Szoboszlai served as the stand-in skipper during the tour in the absence of Virgil van Dijk. Having signed a new five-year contract, Szoboszlai appeared fit and sharp across all three matches. In contrast, Curtis Jones struggled to make an impact and displayed individualistic behaviour
that jarred with Iraola’s emphasis on the collective, according to lfclive.net. Jones is currently entering the final 12 months of his contract amid interest from Inter.
Rio Ngumoha also contributed significantly, scoring the winning goal against Wrexham at Yankee Stadium after being asked to switch to the right flank before returning to the left for the Leeds match.
With the opening Premier League match against Newcastle United scheduled in less than three weeks, the club faces immediate pressure to secure reinforcements in attack and defence.
