Mambat ∙ Parashuramkunn Asya, who was killed by a wild cat during the Odaikal account, was extraordinarily brave. Lived alone in a house on a 2 acre farm. There are no houses nearby. It is surrounded by vast gardens. 500 meters away and forest. Mathan Kadav Road is impassable. A high gear jeep is required for travel. Asya lived alone in such a miserable place. Her husband Shaukam died 8 years ago. Asya did not go even though her children and relatives invited her to their homes saying that she should not stay alone. The answer was that they want to close their eyes in their own land.
Relatives and acquaintances say that Asya was very fond of wild animals. He believed that they would never harm him. Mathan Kadav is the area where wildebeests come down even during the day. A month ago, when he saw her at the wedding house, the relative asked Asya if she was not afraid of the baby elephant.
‘Why should you be afraid, if you enter the paddy field, I will go near with a stick, I will reprimand you to go without showing the trunk, and after watching for a while, the elephant will go away’. Asya has shared this experience with many people. It is customary to sleep at 9 pm. It is concluded that the tragic incident took place before 9 pm on the 11th. There is no sign of getting ready for bed. The body was lying barely 50 meters away from the house.
The local residents are panicking after the incident. A herd of elephants has been coming down since dusk in the populated areas of Odaikal, Karikattumanna and Ruby Nagar. Preventive measures of the forest department were limited to announcements. The people are protesting that none of the higher forest officials reached the spot after learning about the death. Only the range officer came. Asya’s body was buried.
