Livre has grown and does not want to give up on the left-wing government: “I am Free and you are Free, why don’t we go together?”

Rui Tavares arrived at the Thalia Theater smiling. And it was no surprise: he had managed to achieve his objective of having a parliamentary group with distinction. Not even the best polls had given the party such an impressive result. The bitter-sweet taste would come at the end of the night: Livre’s victory will be of little use in a very divided Parliament, without a left-wing majority, as it wanted.

On the last day of the campaign, Livre’s spokesperson had anticipated what was confirmed: it was among the parties that grew the most, percentage-wise. From 1.2% of votes in 2022, it increased to 3.3%, that is, it almost tripled. Among elected deputies, the achievement was even greater, it quadrupled. First elected Jorge Pinto, for Porto. Then the until then only deputy (and spokesperson) Rui Tavares, for Lisbon. After, Isabel Mendes Pinto, for the same constituency. And still Paulo Muacho, from Setúbal.
