Lobo Redesign: DCU Look & Comic Changes

by Sofia Alvarez Entertainment Editor

Jason Momoa‘s take on Lobo, debuting in the upcoming Supergirl film, is already sparking conversation-and a new comic book redesign suggests the live-action version may need to go even bigger. The Czarnian bounty hunter is known for embodying 1990s excess, and DC Comics is leaning into that aesthetic.

Lobo’s Comic Redesign Hints at Momoa’s Potential

Lobo #1,written by Skottie Young with art by Jorge Corona,is part of DC’s NEXT LEVEL initiative launching in 2026,expanding the universe’s primary continuity following DC K.O. The new design doubles down on Lobo’s imposing physique, featuring exaggerated features like spiky hair and oversized leather attire.

This redesign is a purposeful callback to Lobo’s roots, a stark contrast to the character’s controversial, slimmed-down appearance from the New 52 era thirteen years prior. While the comic version’s exaggerated size currently overshadows Jason Momoa’s portrayal, the actor is already considered ideal casting for the role.

Could Lobo Become DC’s Deadpool?

Momoa’s Lobo is set to appear as an antagonist in Craig Gillespie’s supergirl movie, but this could be just the beginning. The DC Universe’s willingness to embrace the more fantastical elements of its source material suggests a comic-accurate Lobo is achievable. However, a truly one-to-one adaptation might require extensive CGI, similar to Colossus in Deadpool or the Hulk in The Avengers.

If Momoa’s Lobo resonates with audiences, a solo project-a movie or TV show-isn’t out of the question. Like Marvel’s deadpool, Lobo could become a character who breaks the fourth wall, embraces R-rated violence, and engages in wild crossovers, solidifying his place as the “Biggest Bastich in the Universe.”
