Urban local government elections across Tamil Nadu were held in a single phase on the 19th. BJP agents protest against an Islamic woman wearing a hijab at a polling booth in the 8th ward of Melur municipality in Madurai district. BJP agent Girirajan argued that the Islamist woman should take off her hijab and enter the polling booth.
In this situation, the BJP got only 10 votes in the 8th ward where the hijab controversy arose in Madurai Melur municipality. Melur DMK candidate has won in that ward.
The DMK has won all the 3 municipal wards in the Madurai municipal elections. Out of 9 municipalities, DMK has won in 7 wards and AIADMK in 1 and Independents in one constituency.
