A santa Barbara County woman has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of her daughter, Melodee Buzzard, whose remains were discovered in rural Utah over two months after she was reported missing.
The case, which began with a missing person report and culminated in a DNA-confirmed identification, has shocked authorities and prompted a statement from the Santa Barbara County sheriff’s Office detailing a meticulously planned and ruthlessly executed crime. ashlee Buzzard, 34, was taken into custody on Tuesday and is being held without bail at the Santa Barbara County Jail.
Road Trip and Disappearance
The investigation began on Oct. 14, when a school district administrator alerted authorities to Melodee Buzzard’s “extended absence” from school. Authorities determined that Melodee and her mother had embarked on a road trip from their Lompoc,California, home on Oct. 7, intending to travel to the Nebraska area. The pair were last seen alive on oct. 9 near the Colorado-Utah border.
According to investigators, Ashlee Buzzard returned to Lompoc on Oct. 10, driving the vehicle they had rented on Oct. 7 – but without her daughter.Authorities allege Ashlee Buzzard actively attempted to obstruct the investigation, making “deliberate efforts to prevent detectives from finding Melodee.”
Revelation in Utah and DNA Confirmation
On Dec. 6, the Wayne County, Utah, Sheriff’s Office received a report from a couple who had discovered a decomposed body while taking photographs in a rural area. The remains went unidentified for weeks until the FBI crime lab, on Monday, established a DNA link between the remains and familial DNA belonging to Ashlee Buzzard.
Evidence recovered from both the Buzzard home and her vehicle further solidified the case against her.A spent shell casing found in the residence matched one recovered at the scene in Utah, and live ammunition of the same type was found in Ashlee Buzzard’s car. While the murder weapon has not yet been recovered, authorities state they have amassed a “notable amount of evidence.”
Sheriff’s Statement and Lack of Motive
Santa barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown described the crime as stemming from “cold-blooded and criminally elegant premeditation and heartlessness…went into planning” and “ruthlessness…went into actually committing the crime.” He further characterized maternal filicide as “rare and always challenging to comprehend.”
As of Tuesday, authorities have not established a motive for the alleged murder. Ashlee Buzzard is reportedly not cooperating with investigators, and officials believe she acted alone.
