London Records Lowest Homicide Rate in Over a Decade, Defying Critics

London has achieved a important milestone in public safety, recording the lowest number of homicides in more than a decade, according to new data released by the Metropolitan Police. With 97 killings reported in the capital last year, figures represent an 11% decrease from the 109 homicides recorded in 2024. The 2025 total marks the lowest since 2014, when 95 homicides were recorded.

the positive trend arrives amid recent scrutiny and claims of escalating crime in the city. Weeks prior, former U.S. President Donald Trump asserted that crime levels in London were “crazy” and alleged that police were avoiding certain areas – accusations swiftly dismissed as “complete nonsense” by Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley.

The decline in homicides extends beyond London, with a 6% reduction reported across England and Wales over the past 12 months, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The ONS data indicates that homicide rates are at their lowest level since current reporting methods began in 2003. A total of 518 homicides were recorded nationwide up to June 2025, compared to 552 in the previous year, representing a 27% drop from the 710 homicides recorded during the pre-COVID pandemic period of 2019/20.

London’s homicide rate per capita also reached a record low last year, standing at 1.1 per 100,000 residents. this figure is notably lower than rates observed in other major global cities, including New York (2.8), berlin (3.2), and Paris (1.6) per 100,000, according to the Metropolitan Police.

Record Low – London’s 97 homicides in 2025 are the fewest recorded as 2014, when 95 killings occured. This represents an 11% decrease from the 109 homicides reported in 2024.

Sir Mark attributed the record-low homicide rate to the “relentless work” of his officers. He highlighted a 1,000-offender monthly arrest increase, the implementation of technologies like live facial recognition, and targeted interventions against gangs, organized crime groups, and individuals preying on vulnerable populations. “The results speak for themselves: fewer lives lost, fewer families shattered,” Sir Mark stated.

The Metropolitan Police emphasized the success of its efforts in curbing youth violence, reporting the lowest number of victims under the age of 25 this century. A significant 73% decrease in teenage victims has been observed since 2021, with numbers dropping from 30 to just eight in 2025. The Mayor of London’s Violence Reduction unit, established in 2019, has played a key role, delivering approximately 550,000 interventions aimed at preventing young people from becoming involved in gang activity.
