A former telecommunications worker is now turning heads in college football, with aspirations of an NFL career after a record-breaking 2025 season at Marshall University. The athlete, who previously played Gaelic football for Donaghmore, shattered the Marshall record for field goals in a single season, showcasing a talent honed through dedication and a surprising career pivot.
A Year of Transformation
Just over a year ago, the aspiring football player was laying telecommunications wires for work. This dramatic shift began after connecting with kicking coach Tadhg Leader, a partnership that proved pivotal in unlocking his potential. In 2024, he stepped away from the Tyrone squad to pursue opportunities in the United States, traveling to Florida to participate in a showcase event for college coaches.
He made an immediate impression, successfully converting all eight of his field goal attempts. This performance earned him a scholarship to Marshall University in May, where he quickly made his debut for the Thundering Herd against the Georgia Bulldogs in front of a crowd of 90,000 at Sanford Stadium.
From Croke Park to Sanford Stadium
The scale of the transition was not lost on the player. “With the All-Ireland final team I was on the bench behind [starting goalkeeper] Niall Morgan at Croke Park [which holds 82,300],” he recalled. “To actually get out on to the field with that sort of capacity is unbelievable.”
The initial experience was daunting. “I went out and it was all going to be new to me. If I was told at the start of the year I’d be doing those sorts of things, I’d have pulled the arm off you,” he admitted. Despite a slow start, he found his rhythm, culminating in a highly successful season.
Record-Breaking Performance and Future Prospects
During the 2025 season, the kicker established himself as one of the nation’s premier college football players, breaking the Marshall University record with 21 field goals. Notably, four of these were from beyond 50 yards, demonstrating exceptional power and accuracy.
“I was going out, I had a bit of a slow start and got comfortable towards, I was really happy with how the season went and getting the records were nice to have on top of that,” he stated. This impressive performance has fueled his ambition to pursue a career in the NFL, a goal that now appears increasingly within reach. His journey serves as an inspiring example of perseverance and the pursuit of dreams, even after taking an unconventional path.
