Lorna A. Eberly, a lifelong resident of Catawba Island, Ohio and a pillar of her community, died Thursday, March 26, 2026, at Otterbein Marblehead, while under the care of Hospice. She was 95 years old. Her passing marks the end of an era for many who knew her warmth, her dedication to family, and her quiet contributions to the character of the Lake Erie shoreline. Eberly’s life, spanning nearly a century, reflected a deep connection to the land and a commitment to hospitality that touched countless visitors to the area.

Born June 15, 1930, in Port Clinton, Ohio, to Wilbur and Wilma (Rofkar) McRitchie, Lorna’s early life was shaped by the rhythms of island living. She graduated from Port Clinton High School in 1947 and pursued studies in piano and organ at Heidelberg University, nurturing a lifelong passion for music. This artistic inclination would remain a source of joy throughout her life, providing solace and a means of connection with others. In 1948, Lorna married Alan R. Eberly, and together they embarked on a venture that would become synonymous with summer memories for generations of families: Harborside Campground on Catawba Island. For over 35 years, the Eberlys owned and operated the campground, creating a welcoming space for campers and fostering a sense of community. The campground, situated on the shores of Lake Erie, became a beloved destination, known for its peaceful atmosphere and friendly hosts. Alan Eberly preceded her in death on April 10, 2008.

A Legacy Built on Hospitality and Family

Harborside Campground wasn’t simply a business for Lorna and Alan; it was an extension of their home and a reflection of their values. Former campers often recall Lorna’s presence around the grounds, offering a kind word, a helping hand, or simply a warm smile. The campground provided not only a place to pitch a tent or park an RV, but also a space for families to connect with nature and with each other. Beyond the campground, Lorna found fulfillment in simple pleasures: playing the piano, tending to her garden, and losing herself in a decent book. She also cherished the quiet moments spent observing the wildlife on her farm, finding beauty in the everyday wonders of nature. These personal pursuits provided a balance to her busy life and nurtured her spirit.

Community and Faith

Lorna was a devoted member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Danbury, Ohio, where she found spiritual nourishment and a sense of belonging. Her faith was a guiding force in her life, providing strength and comfort through both joyful times and challenging ones. St. Paul Lutheran Church has served the Danbury community for over a century, offering worship services and outreach programs. The church’s website details its history and current activities.

She is survived by her grandchildren, Deb (Jamie) Bartlett of Kenton, Ohio, and David Eberly of Eastlake, Ohio, as well as their mother, Nancy Morton. Her great-grandchildren – Landon and Lauren Bartlett, and Ellie, Ian, and Isaac Eberly – represent a continuation of the family legacy she so deeply valued. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Alan, and her son, Dale Eberly.
