According to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, the teen was a passenger in an SUV when she was struck in the head by a bullet fired from a silver truck driven by 54-year-old Barry West. The incident unfolded around 9 a.m. as both vehicles engaged in dangerous driving behaviors, including tailgating and “brake-checking” each other.
Emergency responders transported the teen to a local hospital, where she was immediately placed on life support. Doctors performed an emergency C-section, and the baby is currently listed in stable but critical condition in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
Outrage from Louisiana Officials
The severity of the situation has prompted strong reactions from Louisiana’s leadership. “This is terrible. This poor infant is fighting for their life in the NICU while his or her mother is on life support. All because of road rage? There is no excuse,” Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday.
The sentiment was echoed by Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Gerald Sticker, who described the shooting as “a senseless tragedy on Sunday morning with no logical reason for this family to be experiencing this heartbreak right now.”
Investigation and Charges
Authorities allege that West fired a single round into the SUV while it was in front of his vehicle. Initially, West claimed he believed the occupants of the SUV had fired upon him first. However, investigators found no evidence to support this claim; no weapons were discovered inside the SUV, and no shots were fired from that vehicle.
West has been charged with four counts of attempted second-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon, and obstruction of justice. The Associated Press reported they were unable to immediately identify an attorney who could comment on West’s behalf.
