According to the “Krone” report, Burgenland will ban the shooting of turtledoves from 2024. Animal rights activists and political competitors are now asking themselves: When will Lower Austria finally follow suit?

They are both on the red list and on the hit list: As reported, there was loud criticism of the hunting permit for the turtle doves, which are actually endangered, in the entire eastern region this year. At least Burgenland reacted to the “Krone” report and announced that this year’s Halali on the lovebirds will be the last. And although the population of turtle doves has fallen by 71 percent since 1998, Lower Austria is keeping its feet still. It would be nice if the cause were an isolated case: but the jay has also been hunted again since August 1st. That’s why the Greens are now targeting ÖVP State Deputy Stephan Pernkopf: “Wolf, otter, beaver and jay – apparently no animal is safe under black and blue in Lower Austria,” says state parliament officer Dominic Hörlezeder hearty words. He makes a comprehensive request to the State government, because the shooting not only contradicts species protection, it is also harmful to ecological forestry. Shooting also bad for trees “The deep-rooted and therefore drought-resistant oak and the jay form a symbiosis. Because the birds can tolerate up to 5,000 acorns on well-suited germination sites in the autumn,” Hörlezeder emphasizes the importance of the feathered foresters. The Green: “Simply shooting down everything is like illegal behavior on the part of the authorities!”
