Luis Rubiales, former president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), was detained this Wednesday after landing in Madrid and released a few hours later. The former federative official is at the center of an investigation into alleged criminal acts associated with corporate corruption and money laundering. He was taken to court, where he learned of the charges against him in this legal case. After that, the Spanish authorities released Rubiales, who will now await the start of his trial.

The Spanish authorities monitored the arrival of the flight from the Dominican Republic and carried out the arrest on one of the landing strips at Adolfo Suárez international airport-Barajas, in Madrid. The arrest was already a certainty, knowing that Rubiales had purchased a plane ticket for April 6th. The former federative official decided to bring forward the trip by 72 hours, returning to Spain this Wednesday.

The process affects alleged irregularities in contracts signed by the RFEF since 2018, a period in which the organization was under the presidency of Luis Rubiales and which included the holding of the Spanish football Super Cup in Saudi Arabia.

The searches took place at the RFEF headquarters, in Madrid, and at Luis Rubiales’ house, in Granada, among other places, with at least four arrests being made.
