Dariusz Šukowski: From Logistics Expert to Head of Poland’s National Security Bureau

poland’s national security landscape has seen a key transition with the recent change in leadership at the National Security Bureau (NSB). General Dariusz Šukowski, a veteran of the Polish Army with extensive experience in logistics and strategic planning, served as head of the NSB from February to August of this year, before passing the reins to Sławomir Cenckiewicz following President Karol Nawrocki’s election victory.

A Career Forged in Military Service

Born in 1964 in Koszalin, General Šukowski’s career began in 1983, steadily progressing through the ranks of the Polish Army. For much of his service,he specialized in military logistics, holding key positions such as commander of the 1st Logistics Brigade in bydgoszcz (2008-2009 and 2010-2011) and head of logistics within the Armed Forces Support Inspectorate (2011-2014).He later led the Armed Forces Support Inspectorate itself from March 2016 to June 2019,a unit crucial for providing logistical support to Polish troops both domestically and abroad.

His operational experience extends to international missions, serving as head of logistics for the Multinational Center-South Division in Iraq in 2005 and 2006, and commanding logistics for the Polish contingent in Afghanistan as part of the ISAF mission in 2009 and 2010. Before transitioning to the NSB, Å ukowski reached the position of Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Army in 2020. Notably, he remained in active military service even after joining the National Security Bureau, and will continue to do so until the end of January 2025.

Transition to the National Security Bureau

General Šukowski’s involvement with the NSB began in November 2020, initially as an advisor to the then-head of the Bureau, Paweł Soloch. He afterward became the director of the Department of Command over the Armed Forces within the NSB, before being appointed as its head in February. From March 2022, he served as the Bureau’s deputy before assuming the top position.

The change in leadership at the NSB came after President Nawrocki’s victory in the recent elections.Sławomir Cenckiewicz has now taken over Šukowski’s duties. The transition underscores the importance of continuity and expertise in maintaining Poland’s national security apparatus.

Recognition and Support

The appointment of General Å ukowski to the head of the NSB was met with widespread support. Kosiniak-Kamysz expressed confidence in Å ukowski’s abilities, stating, “I am convinced that the experience of Mr. General, who served, among others, in the General staff of the Polish Army, the Armed Forces Support Inspectorate and the National security Bureau, will be extremely helpful in implementing new tasks.â€

This sentiment was echoed internationally, with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Turkey, Rauf Alp DenktaÅŸ, offering his congratulations and praising Å ukowski’s “specialist knowledge, far-sighted analysis and result-oriented cooperation with partners.â€

The Role of the Department of Defense Strategy and Planning

Central to Poland’s national security framework is the Department of Defense Strategy and Planning. According to data from the Ministry of National Defense, the department is responsible for “planning the development of the national security system and defining the goals of the defense system, programming non-military defense preparations,†as well as “organizing the operational planning process in public administration bodies for the period of external threat to state security and in times of war.†This highlights the department’s critical role in anticipating and preparing for a wide range of security challenges.

General Šukowski’s extensive background in logistics and strategic planning positions him as a key figure in shaping Poland’s defense policies and ensuring the nation’s security in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.
