President Lula defended that the votes of the ministers of the STF (Supreme Federal Court) be secret and affirmed that the population’s dissatisfaction with certain decisions can affect the security of the Court’s magistrates.

The suggestion received criticism in the political and legal spheres. Organizations and experts reacted against the idea, and the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira, mentioned the risk of obscuring the principle of transparency.

Lula’s statement came after criticism from the left of Judge Cristiano Zanin, a lawyer and friend of the president, who was appointed by him to a position on the Court.

It also occurred weeks after STF magistrate Alexandre de Moraes and his relatives were allegedly harassed by a group of Brazilian tourists at the Rome airport.

“Society should not know how a Supreme Court justice votes. The majority voted, it is not necessary for anyone to find out. Because then, every loser gets angry and every winner is happy,” Lula declared.
