Lula defended keeping Julian Assange in the UK

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) classified the UK’s decision to extradite Julian Assange, founder of Wikileaks, as “worrying”. For the petista, Assange carried out an important work against illegitimate actions by countries against others.

The United Kingdom decreed the extradition of Assange this week, as it understands that the journalist has no basis to challenge the High Court’s preferred decision in 2022. However, the defense of the founder of Wikileaks will try a new appeal next week.

For Lula, Assange’s arrest threatens freedom of the press and
defense of democracy. In May, the PT had already defended the maintenance of Assange in the United Kingdom.

“I view with concern the imminent possibility of the extradition of journalist Julian Assange. Assange has done an important job of denouncing illegitimate actions by one State against another. His arrest goes against the defense of democracy and freedom of the press. It is important that we all mobilize. in his defense”, said Lula.

In 2021, the UK Justice authorized Assange’s maintenance in the country. At the time, the judge understood that the arrest could pose risks to the journalist’s mental health.

The sentence, however, was reversed last year. The High Court in London responded to a request by the US government, which guaranteed security and special imprisonment for Julian Assange. The US government also guaranteed the possibility of serving a sentence in Australia, the home country of the founder of Wikileaks.
