EAST LANSING, Mich., Feb. 15, 2024 — Michigan State University’s College of Music will host a captivating concert on Feb. 22, showcasing the delicate sounds of the zheng and qin, two ancient Chinese string instruments, and offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience these traditions live.
A Unique Blend of Tradition and Collaboration
The Lunar New Year Celebration Concert, now in its fifth year, blends solo performances with a chamber ensemble featuring MSU students.
What are the zheng and qin? The zheng, often called the guzheng, is a plucked zither with 21 strings, while the qin is a seven-stringed zither known for its subtle and refined tones.
The concert, set for 3 p.m. in Cook Recital Hall, will feature guest artist Haiqiong Deng, a celebrated performer of both instruments. Deng’s program, titled Nature, Music, and Convergence, explores the expressive capabilities of the zheng and qin through a diverse selection of solo and chamber works.
A centerpiece of the performance is Moon Phase, a concerto composed by Sun Yue specifically for Deng. This piece will be performed alongside a chamber ensemble comprised of MSU students playing flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and percussion. The program also includes solo pieces for the 21-string guzheng, allowing Deng to demonstrate the instrument’s versatility and depth.
“This annual concert has become a unique and creative addition to our season,” said Yvonne Lam, associate professor of violin and director of the Lunar New Year Celebration Concert. “By including student chamber musicians on the program, it gives them the opportunity to perform in a culturally rich musical setting while offering audiences the chance to experience musical traditions that are rarely heard live. It’s also a meaningful way for all of us to learn from an artist who brings deep knowledge and perspective to the performance.”
Deng’s dedication to preserving and presenting Chinese musical traditions has earned her widespread recognition, including the 2017 Florida Folk Heritage Award, which honors individuals who have significantly contributed to cultural heritage. She will share insights into the history, sound, and cultural context of the zheng and qin during the concert.
A Post-Concert Gathering
Following the performance, attendees are invited to a casual reception with refreshments, providing an opportunity to connect with the musicians and further discuss the music.
