Cire Trudon – Gloria
Every year you need a scent that holds everything together on Christmas Eve. When they all sit together under the tree to deliver the gifts, the air is already heavy from the festive lunch, the mulled wine smokes in the cups of the adults adn the punch in the cups of the little ones and the teetotalers. The most engaging candidate for this position this year comes from Cire Trudon: we chose Gloria from the Christmas collection of the traditional house of scented candles.“Hallelujah” would also be an appropriate exclamation for this stunning candle: that’s how christmas works. With cardamom, coriander, incense and orange as top notes, the olfactory journey begins in a classic Christmas way. Especially when you unpack it, you might think you have a cup of freshly made punch in your hands. After a while, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg emerge, even more classic scents for contemplative moments. But it is above all the warm base that makes this candle something truly special: amber, cedar wood, patchouli, vetiver. All four exude a cozy, welcoming warmth, which is a really nice antidote to all the excitement, especially during the holidays. After all, someone has to cook, someone has to heat the punch and even the children want to be looked after. Sadly this candle can’t do that (it would be nice), but Gloria by Cire Trudon is like a discreet thread that manages to perfectly underline all the different sensory impressions of a Christmas. the beautiful glass – ruby red with gold illustration – fits perfectly and discreetly into Christmas decorations. it doesn’t get more Christmassy than this.
Jazis – Golden Gaytime
No, Jazis didn’t create a pride candle here (despite the pink wick), but was inspired by an Australian ice cream specialty. “Golden Gaytime” has been the name of a popsicle as 1959. Perhaps more comparable to the good old “Nogger” from the ice cream stand. Golden Gaytime has a caramel and vanilla flavor and is coated on the outside with crunchy cookie crumbs. the candle of the same name aims to revive this very smell; its scent is vanilla, chocolatey and, above all, reminiscent of
Especially in the cold season, sometimes you need a little push to remember that sunnier times are coming soon, that next spring is upon us and that it won’t be long before the trees are full of fruit again. Euphoria Oh La La is a great candidate for that little push that carries you through the shortest days of the year: the hope of summer. The candle that Karine Vinchon created for L’Atelier parfum smells of hemp, fig and patchouli. And above all, the fig hits you as soon as you open the dark red box, as if you were in front of the exuberant display of a greengrocer. The candle alone can easily scent an entire room. Once the candle is lit, Euphoria Oh La La turns out to be a very subtle accompaniment, the hemp and patchouli come to the fore a little
Le labo’s Santal fragrances are among TikTok’s favorite fashion scents and appear in Beyoncé’s visual album lemonade The brand’s scented candles have earned a firm place in pop culture, too. In addition to Santal, Le Labo also offers other remarkable scented creations (candles). cyprès 21 for exmaple. As is typical for the brand, the candle is very simple, white wax in a heavy, high-quality glass with a personalized label glued on. When you open the package, the scent initially reminds you of linoleum floors and hot rubber, before revealing all its complexity. With cypress as the top note, juniper, clove and star anise as the heart note and a spicy base of incense and patchouli, this candle exudes the coziness of a leather armchair in front of a fireplace even when unlit.Once lit, the complex interaction of the individual components acquires additional warmth, as if the candle were actually on the mantelpiece. Cyprès 21, in its simple box, with the heavy glass and the playful yet intense scent, is perhaps an ideal gift for all those who still suspect that scented candles are banal, sweet-smelling blocks of wax in glasses without love and have no interest in overly decorative candles
Loewe – Tuberose
If any luxury brand had a really good year in 2024, it was probably Loewe. Anna Wintour gentrified the house by walking the red carpet at the Met Gala in May in a dress by creative director Jonathan Anderson (she previously wore Lagerfeld only for such occasions), and celebs like Josh O’Connor and Daniel Craig showed up in the gowns of the Spanish brand. For some years now, scented candles have also occupied an significant place in the house’s line-up: summer 2023, like Tomato Girl Summer, was dedicated to Loewe’s tomato candle, the most remarkable scent of a line inspired by vegetable garden. For winter 2024, however, Loewe has said goodbye to the vegetable garden and has launched a small Christmas line in collaboration with the ceramic artist duo Suna Fujita. We love tuberose. It also comes in the typical Loewe terracotta pot, this time mottled in light gray. And what can we say: this scented candle is also cutting edge. The tuberose scent is subtle but clearly defined when opened. Once lit, the perfume creates an even more subtle impression, as if there were a lush bouquet of flowers in the room, and when you close your eyes you immediately feel as if you have been transported to a sunny villa on a carefree summer day. Pure olfactory escape. The fact that despite all the floral note the scent does not turn into an unpleasant sweetness proves once again what fantastic craftsmanship lies in Loewe’s scented candles. The only flaw: the rather high price.Perhaps you should first treat yourself to this candle or give it to the partner with whom you share the apartment.
what are the key elements to consider when choosing a holiday candle?
Interview Between Time.news Editor and Scent Expert
Editor: Welcome to our special segment on holiday scents! Today, I’m thrilled to have with us Dr. Claire Harmon,a fragrance expert and scent anthropologist. Claire, thank you for joining us!
Dr. Harmon: Thank you for having me! I’m excited to delve into the olfactory world of holiday fragrances.
Editor: Let’s start with one of the standout candles from this season: Gloria by Cire Trudon. It truly seems to be an instant favorite for Christmas gatherings. What do you think makes this candle so especially festive?
Dr. harmon: Gloria captures the essence of Christmas beautifully. Its blend of cardamom, coriander, incense, and orange creates a warm, inviting aura. These scents are reminiscent of conventional holiday spices and activities, like preparing a festive lunch or enjoying a cup of mulled wine. The olfactory journey it offers is both nostalgic and celebratory, making it perfect for family gatherings.
Editor: It truly is an olfactory feast! The layered notes of cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg that follow really add to that classic Christmas experience. How meaningful is this progression of scents in a candle?
Dr. Harmon: The evolution of scent is crucial. It reflects the complex nature of our experiences. As scents develop from the top to the base notes, they evoke different memories and emotions, allowing us to savor each moment throughout the evening. When Gloria transitions into warm notes of amber and cedarwood, it feels like being wrapped in a cozy blanket, relieving us from the holiday chaos.
Editor: That’s a lovely way to put it. Now, shifting gears to a more playful option, we have Jazis’ Golden Gaytime candle. It’s inspired by an Australian ice cream! How do you feel about the use of nostalgic food scents in candles?
Dr. Harmon: Nostalgia plays a huge role in scent perception. When we encounter a fragrance that reminds us of a beloved treat, it can instantly uplift our spirits. Golden Gaytime encapsulates that joy, with its caramel and vanilla notes reminiscent of carefree summer days. It’s an interesting counterpoint to the heavier scents of winter, as it evokes warmth and playfulness during the colder months.
editor: It sounds like a delightful way to bring some summer vibes into the winter season! Speaking of seasonal transitions, how about L’Atelier’s Euphoria Oh la La? Its combination of hemp, fig, and patchouli seems strategically designed to usher in thoughts of spring.
Dr. Harmon: Exactly! Euphoria Oh La La does a brilliant job at bridging the gap between seasons. The fig brings a fresh, fruit-forward aspect that’s both vibrant and uplifting, while the hemp and patchouli ground the scent, offering stability and comfort as winter drags on.It’s vital to have fragrances that inspire hope and anticipation for warmer days ahead, especially when we’re facing the bleak midwinter.
Editor: I love that perspective. Can you also tell us about Le Labo’s Santal and Cyprès 21? They have gained quite a cultural following, with Santal even appearing in Beyoncé’s visual album. What do you think has contributed to their popularity?
Dr. Harmon: Le Labo has mastered the art of simplicity and quality. Their fragrances, like Santal, resonate with individuals for their authenticity and depth. The layered complexity—where the scent begins with that intriguing linoleum note—allows for personal interpretation and discovery. It attracts people seeking unique, artisanal experiences. Plus, its connection to pop culture definitely elevates its status, making it more than just a candle; it becomes a lifestyle symbol.
Editor: It seems that these scents are creating entire atmospheres and experiences. What final thoughts would you like to share about choosing the right candle for the holidays?
Dr. harmon: When selecting a candle, consider the emotions you wish to evoke and the memories you want to create. Scents can transport us to joyful moments; they weave threads through our experiences. So whether it’s a familiar note from childhood or a new scent that sparks your creativity, choose something that resonates with you. This holiday season, let your spaces be filled with warmth, joy, and a touch of nostalgia.
Editor: Beautifully said, claire. thank you for sharing your insights with us today. May everyone’s holidays be filled with delightful scents and cherished memories!
