Lyon Beats Nice 2-1 to Claim French League Top Spot

Olympique Lyonnais climbed to the top of the French league table on 14 points after defeating visiting Nice 2-1 on Sunday evening, bringing a dramatic close to the seventh round of the season with a fiery match featuring a red card and a late disallowed goal.

Lyon Overcomes First-Half Deficit and a Red Card Against Nice

Lyon entered the Sunday evening fixture missing several key players, including Tolisso, Nuamah, Morton, and Greif. Despite the absences, Paulo Fonseca’s side monopolised the ball from the outset with a high press and long spells of possession, though their early dominance failed to truly test opposing goalkeeper Yehvann Diouf.

Nice struck first against the run of play. From their opening serious attack in the 18th minute, Jonathan Clauss broke down the right flank and delivered a precise cross to Elye Wahi, who buried a direct strike into the tight corner of Remy Descamps’ goal.

The hosts responded with two quick goals before halftime. In the 32nd minute, Duranville surged down the left, and although Diouf saved his powerful shot, Pavel Sulc followed up to tuck home the equalizer. Just two minutes later, Tanner Tessmann headed in a cross from Atikam following a short-passed free kick, giving Lyon a 2-1 lead that they carried into the break alongside 60% possession.

Abdelmonem Sparks Turning Points in a Heated Second Half

Egyptian defender Mohamed Abdelmonem anchored the Nice backline and became a central figure in the match’s volatile second half. After picking up a yellow card in the 48th minute, Abdelmonem found himself involved in the game’s major disciplinary flashpoint in the 70th minute.

Kaito Nakamura, who had come on as a substitute for Duranville roughly ten minutes prior, received a straight red card after unintentionally planting his studs in Abdelmonem’s chest during an aerial challenge. The dismissal left Lyon playing with ten men for the remainder of the contest, while Nice caught an immediate psychological lift from their numerical advantage.

Abdelmonem eventually left the pitch himself in the 81st minute. As Nice pressed forward, Axel Witsel struck the crossbar with a header from a Clauss set piece in the 52nd minute, and Nkunku forced a sharp save from Descamps with a powerful effort from the left side.

Late Drama and the French League Standings

Nice pushed frantically for an equalizer after gaining the man advantage. In the 73rd minute, Wahi nearly secured his second goal of the match, meeting a cross from Nkunku with a header that struck the post. As the game entered stoppage time, Wahi put the ball in the net again, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
