Emil Sylvegård has returned to Malmö Redhawks on a short-term contract, bringing immediate veteran depth to a forward group currently depleted by injuries ahead of five matches before the November break.
Malmö Redhawks Add Emil Sylvegård on Short-Term Deal
Emil Sylvegård is back in the SHL after spending the summer and autumn without a club. The 33-year-old forward has spent time training with the Malmö Redhawks junior team while weighing his options.
He now rejoins his boyhood club on an immediate short-term agreement. It’s really fun to be back in Malmö again. Malmö is where the heart has always been. It’s home, and I’m going to do everything for Malmö
said Emil Sylvegård through the club’s official website.
Injuries Force Roster Adjustments in Malmö
The move follows a mounting injury toll among Malmö forwards. Club captain and top center Fredrik Händemark suffered an upper-body injury during his first shift in the third match of the season and is sidelined until at least November. During a 6-0 victory against Örebro, forward Hugo Pettersson also left the lineup following a check, and eighteen-year-old William Lind was called up as an extra forward during a subsequent 3-2 penalty-shootout loss to Djurgården at Hovet.
Oscar Alsenfelt said that Emil knows the club, knows what is required here, and comes in with energy and experience, adding that with the absences they have on the forward side, it feels good to be able to bring in a player who can help them here and now.
Finnish Championship Precedes Return to Sweden
Before signing with Malmö, Sylvegård secured his first career league title abroad. He moved to Finland last year to play for Tappara, where he emerged as a key contributor during their run to the championship after defeating KooKoo in a decisive seventh final game. Tappara announced his departure shortly after the championship win, leaving the veteran unattached until now.

While he drew interest from several Finnish clubs, Sylvegård turned down those offers while considering his next destination. Over his career, he has logged 542 SHL appearances, including 268 games across six seasons with his hometown club Malmö Redhawks alongside stints with Luleå, Linköping, and Växjö.
Upcoming Schedule for Seventh-Place Malmö
Currently sitting seventh in the SHL standings, Malmö has scheduled matches against Björklöven and Timrå this week, with Sylvegård available to play immediately.

The team faces a demanding stretch before the league pauses. Malmö has five fixtures remaining before the international break begins on November 1, leaving the club to navigate its current roster limitations.
