Afferden | The region has a new green initiative: the Maasduinen Afferden Food Forest Foundation was officially established on Sunday morning,January 11. By signing the signature at the notary, the first important step has been taken to create a place where the community of Afferden and surrounding areas can learn, enjoy and discover what a food forest can mean for nature and people.
The initiative is intended “for and by the people”. The foundation strives for a biotope with maximum biodiversity, which offers a home to various plant species, insects and amphibians. An important spearhead is involving and motivating youth, so that something beatiful and educational is left behind for future generations.
Although a food forest only produces real yields after five to eight years, it is the dream of the initiators to ultimately be able to harvest and market products. The realization was made possible in part by a financial contribution from the village council in Afferden, which could be used to pay the foundation’s establishment costs.
The next challenge is to obtain a suitable plot of land.Preference is given to a location close to the village, so that the food forest is also easily accessible for less mobile people. A plot on the Heikant is currently being considered, but the foundation is keeping its eyes open for other possibilities.
The development plan will be presented soon to generate enthusiasm and raise subsidies. The foundation hopes to be able to break ground at the end of this year or around this time next year.
